Crates and Barrels

There are so many times when a covered dish party makes good sense. Like when you're young and broke, for one. My daughter-in-law-to-be has a birthday this week, and is also celebrating her MA degree with such a gathering, and is my inspiration for this table.

I've wanted to give a tailgate party with vintage crates and firkins for some time. Besides being a terrific way to cart a party around, vintage boxes and containers have so much character. The graphics are fun, and it's easy and interesting to display things with all the differing heights.

The set-up is also the centerpiece, with plenty of room left  around for the arriving dishes.

I have softened the look with vintage linens. I like the contrast, and love using my collections.

An interesting country-style mix of tea towels and orphaned monogrammed damask serve as napkins.

Wassail! And thanks for dropping by!
Ciao! for now!

  3. You have some wonderful vintage containers and I agree, the writing makes them extra special. It was the perfect touch to couple them with the linens and then candlelight. I felt transported.

  17. Jacqueline, this is a great idea, and you know I LOVE the contrast with the linens! I have a few old wooden boxes I found underneath our house when we renovated it. Now if I can just pick up a few more somewhere, I could copy your beautiful tablescape...
