Keeping White For Fall

I tend to be more of a make-do decorator than starting all over new. That doesn't mean that everything I own has to cost bottom dollar. I love thrifting, and finding a beautiful bargain, but I also appreciate that it leaves room in the budget for something with a price tag a little more dear.

I mention Pottery Barn a lot on this blog. What's odd about that is that I'm not fully into the PB "look" as a whole. Where they offer reproductions, I'd rather live with a little patina. And I like a softer and lighter environment overall.

But I do love many PB designs. And thankfully much of what is offered at PB is perfectly adaptable to a variety of tastes. And that's probably a clue to their success. I love these knit pillow covers I discovered there this season. They work well with the ultra casual tone of my sitting room, and warm up the textures for the colder months.

We still have mild temperatures here, but I'm ready to ensure that the fireplace screen is easy to move when it gets chilly too. (That's a vintage crocheted topper across the chair back. I use my linen collections wherever I can.)

I have beautiful white upholstery on my club chair, and I want to keep it that way until I spring for slipcovers. Which may be never! I don't mind at all keeping a stack of vintage throws around for the purpose. Between pets, grandkids, and munching with TV, it's an easy way of life. I like white, and I have a perfectly good washing machine!

Now it's sweater weather for the furniture too!

There's a nice deep PB basket for stacks of books and magazines next to my favorite blogging chair in this room as well. The square shape works well in this cozy space where so much life happens.

By contrast, this hand made afghan on the sofa was a thrift store find for well under ten dollars. We've enjoyed it during colder weather for years now.

I'll be adding a touch of color here and there through the holidays, but for now I'm glad to keep a quieter space now that we are spending more time inside.

Thanks so much for coming by!

Jacqueline

Jacqueline,
Love the peacefulness of the white contrasted with the pale shades of willow browns and mellow yellows in your dried florals!!! Great thrift store finds along with your Pottery Barn purchases! Fall is calming @ Cabin & Cottage, exquisitely so!
Fondly,
Pat

I've been a fan of PB. I like your basket alot. I have a table lamp I got by catalog from them this past late spring. I accidentaly dented it after getting it and made it look really vintage.

I just love these pictures and love the sweater pillow cover. I was at the PB outlet today and touched those, but did not buy one. I may have to go back.

I read your blog in Google Reader, so sometimes I get lazy and don't click over and comment. But, thought today I'd pop in and say I love your posts and photos. They are lovely and inspirational every time!

Jacqueline, the chair really looks so warm and inviting. Your textures are all so perfect together and the sweater pillows are lovely. I don't get to Pottery Barn much, the only thing I've every bought there is the fountain that is in the front garden. Keep warm..Judy

I just love visiting you. It's always an aaaaah moment. I wouldn't dare sit to watch TV, have grandchildren pets and all the other things you mentioned though...I think it would have to be behind a glass screen in my house!! But I can visit you and dream :-) Joan

I LOVE the pillow cover from Pottery Barn. You are going to make me go there and buy one. I love white or ivory for covering chairs and sofas. I Use white chenille blankets and white matelasse bed covers to cover most of my chairs and sofas all year round. It is cheaper than paying for slip covers which I keep procrastinating about getting.

I too love using white during the winter months starting in November. I also bring out my brown transferware then because the brown and white reminds me of the bare trees and brown grasses outside.
Love that sweater pillow! It looks so inviting and your throw is inviting too. I have a knit throw on my bed that I found at a yard sale for $5 and I just love it and so does the dog. He loves to get under it and curl up. Thankfully it's well made and very sturdy since he uses it and it has to go through the wash quite often.

I love Pottery Barn, too! But not the prices! I think it's fun trying to recreate their look, but on a realistic budget! Those pillows look oh so cozy:)

Hi Jacqueline,
Love your cottage home and I love PB too, but like you, just touches here and there with my vintage treasures. Love the sweater weather style for the season. Just gorgeous and comfy.

So enjoyed my visit here. I love New Mexico and was in your area this summer on vacation.

Your look is beautiful. I love your PB pillows. I don't have one close enough to just drop in, but I get the catalogues and love to flip through them.

I made white slipcovers in the summer and I have ended up keeping a white quilt on the sofa to protect from sandy feet from my day time napper. They are easy to get clean, but it is still a pain to take them off and wash them.

My favorite thing you said about this room..."where so much life happens."
And, isn't that THE most important thing? Love your decorating!! pat

I just love your home, Jacqueline. And you present it so prettily, with such lovely descriptive text that just draws me in. My 'cottage of many colors' is me, but I secretly harbor a desire for a home or a studio (or at least a room!) in soft shades of ivory, white, beige and taupe. It's lovely to enjoy that palette vicariously, and never more than when I visit you!

What a beautiful sitting room. This looks like the perfect place to sit, read, blog and dream! I like the large basket for storing magazines--I recently picked up a couple of big baskets while out thrifting, and I was surprised at how much I've used them for storage already.

Jacqueline, I love the soft neutral shades of your living room for this time of year. I just did a post about changing over to that tonight and hadn't even read your post. I'd love to find some knit pillow covers so will have to look around. Perhaps I'll find some old sweaters to cover them with. ;) Beautiful post.

Really pretty to have your furniture wear sweaters. Looks so cozy. I like the white ruler too. My Dad has one of those. I don't see them much in thrift or antique stores. Thanks for joining me at HSH!
