Sweet Details

I found a few of the sweetest pieces of linen and china on my weekend fleamarket outing, and I always enjoy inspecting the minute details.

Pastels are the theme of the day. It's a bit unusual to find shabby chic colors before someone else has snapped them up, so I feel pretty lucky.

Nothing cheerier than a jumble of floral china all mixed together.

This sweetly embroidered linen is a dresser cloth in perfect condition. I'm often asked about how I whiten linens, but the best trick is just to find them that way! This one came already ironed! (I really have no special tricks BTW!)

The little pitchers can be for gifts or for holding pretty spoons or flowers. I have seen the most darling displays lately with them all grouped together.

This runner would be lovely for a bedside table.

This sample is a large huck towel. I think the little ones are pretty, but a bigger one can actually be put to good use!

I have no idea of the origin of this orphaned teacup. It just begged to be taken home, please. . . .

I am always charmed at the originality and practicality of vintage linens. This one has been finished off in a pink thread after the white one ran out! If you scroll up again to the previous example you will see that a single blue flower has been stitiched in with all the rest to wonderful effect. We are left to wonder whether it is by design, serendipity, or mere necessity. Delightful, either way. . . .

Nothing left but to enjoy the sweet details. . . .

 Have a great week!

Jacqueline

  1. Oh you are making me want to stitch all the more!!! I used to embroider with my Mom as a girl and have been longing to return to this art of sewing. I bought all my supplies back in November and well they still sit, untouched. It has been so warm that I couldn't help but to be outdoors. Now winter has finally come, so I can begin stitching. I know how to embroider just like your beautiful linen finds here. That lil cup would be calling me too. Adorably sweet. xxo

  2. Jacqueline,
Gorgeous vintage linens, dear friend!!! I adore how you've group the delicate china cups and pitchers alongside!
My beloved Mother~in~law once gave me a tea cloth that was finished off with non~matching hues. When I questioned the difference on one side, her explaination was that when one ran out of the given color, you simply "used what you had" to complete or finish off the piece. It was considered a bad omen to leave the piece unfinished and begin another . . .good rule of thumb, I'd say.
Being the "unique" individual that I am...I agree, that it gives these delicate pieces more personality!!! Each one is still beautifully exquisite in my thinking!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  3. Such shabby sweet finds!!! Not only do the pottery pieces have lovely floral designs~~~but look at those handles, soooo pretty! Like you, I recently found a very nice dresser scarf in soft pastels...it's ready to go, a lovely happenstance. I like the insight that Pat Cantwell provided.

  4. What lovely linens. They are each so precious and make you wonder what it was like to live in an era where they were the norm. Must have been a much sweeter way of live.
Love all the French knots. These will look lovely in your shop.

  5. Just catching up on your last few posts that I've missed Jacqueline. It's been so hoooooot here,I haven't felt much like blogging, but today has cooled a little so I'm catching up. I wasn't aware you were moving shop. This one looks a lot bigger and sooooo pretty. Looking forward to more. xx

  6. I love all the handiwork that went into everyday items. I can imagine that a young girl worked on the towels and was told 'no, you can't have another skein of floss - use up the bits you have.'
    Thus the blue.....and the pink!

  9. Lovely photos of your pretties. I didn't know that the towels are called huck cloth. I have several that I use as runners and some have sweet crochet edging. They are a favourite of mine and were all from family members. The pretty embroidery details are sweet. I hope you have a nice week!

  13. What sweet finds, Jacqueline. I cannot resist orphaned teacups and sometimes use them to hold rings or as a cup for guests in the powder room. And the pitchers you found are lovely, too, and have so many uses! I do love huck toweling... that random little blue 'forget-me-not' on the one you found is so dear! I'm lucky to have a few towels like that and I use them all the time. One day they will simply be too frail but until then, why not enjoy them? (By the way, a sweet use for a table runner is as a valance... have you ever done that?) Wishing you a lovely week ahead.

  21. Beautiful, beautiful....of course I especially love the pitchers...and then the linens. I smiled when I read your comment to only get linens in nice condition....I don't think I have ever bought any linens...either they FIND me, or I inherited them. Either way, by the time they show up they need a bath. I bought some vintage linen soak over the weekend, so I have high hopes. Some of my linens came from my grandmother's (plural) hope chests, (pre 1900) so they really need a bit of attention. It's fun doing them up and thinking about their amazing lifetimes.
    Blessings to you,
    J
PS: the Rosepoint has made the first leg of her journey......

  24. what lovely finds. I love to think about the people who sat and stitched so long ago, what their hopes and dreams were. These are in beautiful condition. And I think people thought to "use up or make do" which gives them real personality.
