Old Traditions

Seasons Greetings friends! I finally pulled out the decorations and got my mantel dressed the way I want it. Things always get worse before they get better, but most of the overflow has been (mostly) tucked away. There were more decisions than I wanted to make this year. But I went easy on myself and the whole first part of the week disappeared into fiddling with Christmas's past to the backdrop of good movies and music.

I have my favorites, as we all do, that reappear almost every year. But it's always fun to add something new. I'm always on the lookout for something vintage and original, and I found it!

This is a little vintage Christmas tree fashioned from tiny seashells and pearls. The shell rims have been dipped in glitter before they have been glued onto a cone shaped base. Maybe the little tree looks familiar to you if you live near the sea, but I have never seen anything like it! It feeds my need for  things natural, creative, recycled, vintage and in my color scheme. A tiny Christmas miracle to start the season! Isn't it charming?

I also tuck away this old, weathered Currier and Ives "Winter In The Country" print all year long in order to appreciate fully it's annual debut. It reflects the twinkle lights from the Christmas tree behind me, as the age, color, and tone draws me into the scene. As though a part of my own deep past is mirrored there as well. But that is the magic of Christmas!

The picture gets showcased within this larger frame almost all winter long.

One of my favorite decorating books is this "White Christmas" volume from Tricia Foley. It somehow continues to inspire my white on white style ever since its publication in 1997. It's a good place to launch fresh ideas from. Or traditional ones!

We always want to have a small fresh green tree, for instance, and fresh cut greens when we can. I keep the tree supplied with a bucket of water, and spritz it every time I pass by. How could we have Christmas without that wonderful smell in the house?

The hutch gets a small dressing up too.

I am crazy for all manner of wreaths and really have too many, but this preserved boxwood wreath is one of my very favorites. It lives on year after year. It's shown here lying upon a crisp vintage linen tablecloth with whitework embroidery at the corners.

The details suggest oak leaves to me. I always feel gifted from the universe when such a beautiful hand worked cloth crosses my path. And it most usually comes at a very small cost.

I also fashioned another small wreath yesterday from my orange flowered trumpet vine which is evergreen. The spent vines are sturdy enough to hold the small shape without support. And it is a symbol to me of keeping Christmas present.

There are too many collections! I could never have them all out at once. At least not in this humble little house of mine. But we must always make room for Christmas stories and lovely little vignettes.

For old memories, our gifts from the past.

And for whimsy, to cheer our hearts from within when the winds of the world blow without.

"I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future!" Scrooge repeated. as he scrambled out of bed. "The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me."

From Stave Five, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens

Christmas is coming!

Wishing you joy in the days ahead.

Cheery Farmhouse Friday!

Hello Friends! It's Friday! (Whatever that means these days.) I'm feeling "farmhouse" and needing a dose of  a few cheery things like dishes (ironstone especially), linens, chippy white paint, and pitchers.

This is one of my favorites. I love it for spring and summer with its spray of flowers.

And yes, there are two! (And a matching basin tucked away somewhere.) I need to do another post featuring them again sometime when my creative valve is switched back on.

A little white dress might stand in for flowers until I can turn some up somewhere. But what I really need is a few fresh herb pots.

My main nursery is closed and every place else is swamped. (So of course now that's all I can think about. . . .) Yeah, I know you can order online. Not the same. I would love to get back to Guy Wolff's pottery this year too! But that is a bit far afield from Albuquerque for now.

Maybe ironing a few linens will help! But I'd rather be in the yard. (But now I'm starting to sound like a whiny little kid.) Sheeesh!

My snowball bushes have finished blooming and I missed getting a picture of them in the pitcher before they were gone. But here is a pic from last year. The blooms were all smaller this year. What to do about that?? Anything?

Sorting through my linen piles always cheers me up, and finding a new cloth for the table that I haven't used for a while does too. Maybe I'll show that next time.

In the meantime I hope you're finding a few cheery things for your weekend too!

All the best, from me to you!

Familiar Things For a Winter's Day

Hello Friends! It's almost Valentines Day and so I am sending you all the love!

It has been a long while since I checked in here, but as you will soon see, not much has changed.

I think I mentioned that I have a new camera, so this is a very experimental post. I always want things to be simpler than is possible, and I don't want to spend the time it takes to learn new gadgets. But things finally reached critical mass and I think I made a breakthrough!

I just started with what is right in front a me as a subject, but there are always one or two new things of course.

I am so proud that after two years my Oxalis shamrock is still alive! It went completely dormant, wilted, and lost all it's growth just before Christmas. I panicked! But I read up and learned that due to conditions that this is kind of normal. I repotted, got it a sunny window, and you wouldn't believe how fast it all came back. I'm just so pleased!!

This little embroidered runner is new to me and makes me almost as happy as my resurrected plant.

I use my few seed sacks in a ton of different ways, and always have them ready nearby too.

And a couple of mustard pots still line the shelves.

And pitchers in a row. (I would need detailed instructions on how to live without those...)

There have been so many dark days that I decided to leave my lighted birch trees up a while longer. I brought them home from the shop and still couldn't find the heart to put them away. There have been so many houseguests of late that I find they are a lovely way to light the way in an unfamiliar place. A gentle night light emanating from the center of the whole house.

There are only small changes to the top cupboard shelf. Sometimes I just want to look at something different!

These little brown baby boots are new here and cheery as all get out! And after a very long time of longing I managed to get a few sprigs of tallow berry to decorate with. They are not native here, but I love the way they look in vignettes.

The days whiz by. Folks come and go. Before we have a chance to look up we have turned another year older. I find that I don't change things up as often as I used to, and love the sameness of things more. At least in the wintertime. . . .

I hope that this finds you surrounded by all that you love too!

Cheery days ahead to you!

Love,

 Jacqueline

Pieces of Vintage Linen

Fall is always the beginning of linen season to me as the world turns inward. Summer is great for getting to markets and making fabulous finds, as I hope to do any time of year, but working with linens is another story. Nothing like a crisp day to cozy up and get in a little linen therapy at the ironing board!

It's been a long stretch since we had a good dose of linen love here on the blog, so I am including a few links that you vintage linen lovers in the audience will appreciate too.

One old post you might enjoy perusing again is Ironing Linen~Befores and Afters here.

But I have recently found one of the most remarkable blogs on Instagram that you may already know about by Yuka, In My Room. I promise you, if you don't already know this page you are in for a real treat! The vignettes of linens and lace are soulful and delicate and dreamy. I just can't get enough! I would show you a sample, but I don't want anyone pinning her wonderful work from here. Check it out at this link.

Finally, Back in the Linen Nursery, here, might give you another good session of linen love if you are needing any right now.

Sometimes when I iron, I leave my work out on display for a while just to appreciate the beauty as I pass through doing tasks throughout the day.

And other times looking back through old posts I have regrets for many of the gorgeous old pieces that have gone on to other lucky owners. It can be a little heartbreaking being in the vintage linen business! LOL! (not really kidding)

It's a little like finding a new owner for your old home, or a pet you have to give up. You want to find someone really worthy! But seriously, not everyone appreciates the value of beautiful old hand work.

It is my personal garden of delights.

I hope you are finding daily pleasures of your own to feed your soul this week.

Carry on. . . .

Jacqueline
