Hanging The New Bed Canopy

Late afternoon is prime time for taking photos in this west facing room where the freshly painted bed has been placed.

We have just barely begun to put the room together, but I was eager to try out a few looks and linens on the new bed anyway.

I knew that I wanted the new ruffle canopy in white from Simply Shabby Chic at Target. I had to visit two stores to find it, and it was the last white one in stock where I shopped. But it was worth the trouble!

The newly painted bed looks wonderful in the space even minus a full dressing out.

And the canopy gives such a romantic look to the room. . . .

The sweet floral closet door pulls.

On the same day, I went looking for a tall night stand to accomodate the tall mattress and found a rustic garden style stand that may work for me. A stack of books hides the cord and an odd six inch  pipe protruding from the floor. There is a lot to work around in this old house!

I already had the antique marble lamp, and I like how it relates in style to the metal table.

The rustic top helps keep things more casual.

So much more to do! But I plan to keep things simple.

I'm so glad we decided to paint the bed!

So there you are for a first look!

I hope you enjoyed having a peek at how the bed turned out.

Have a great weekend whatever you're up to!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Bohemian Style

I took a quick trip for family business and came home with a cold! But I also managed to get a few fun shots of the little place that my niece Joanna is setting up for the summer at her parents guest house in Santa Barbara.

The place is small, but what it may lack in the interior it makes up for in spades on the outside. There are little patios that surround the whole apartment located on the second floor of a large garage/ workspace on the property. And what a great start Joanna has on making this beautiful terrace her own!

Everything she loves just whispers "Bohemian Style" to me. On her last day of finals she got busy dressing out the corners of this dreamy balcony terrace. Both of us were entranced by visions of languorous afternoons and evenings spent entertaining out here.

She rescued this wonderfully weathered grey wicker furniture for one little private corner outside of her front door, and dressed it in cushions and a few favorite textiles she has been saving.

A sweet vintage embroidered runner decorates the seat.

Potted plants are a big component of Boho style, and Joanna has her favorites. Her side table vignette includes one of her many collected figurine treasures.

The table was a roadside find, and the striped cotton cover is from a trip to Turkey.

Taking the long view.

And all the views are spectacular! This is the arbor we pass through to get to her place from the villa up top.

The horse paddock down below.

The front view always reminds me of the Sabrina movie with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond. This would make charming chauffeur's quarters with the cars right below.

What a lovely spot to live in for awhile with your favorite dog and pony!

You might remember Huey from another post.

A perfect place to relax after a hectic semester. Or anytime!

I have some catching up to do as usual.

But I hope you are having a wonderful week!

Painting The New Guest Bed

I found this twin size antique bed recently and considered putting it into the guest house with its mahogany finish as is. But a vision of white just would not leave my head. (Surprise, surprise! haha!)

Mr. Cottage has gravitated to this shady spot out back for the painting tasks. Bless that man!

Doesn't everyone paint outside under the junipers? There was a drop cloth involved of course. But I remembered to document the process too far along in the game for that. Here the head and foot boards are leaning to finish drying.

This was also an experiment for me to practise shooting with my camera phone. Something very new to me. The pics here are a mix between my tiny Olympus point and shoot and my camera phone. I have just joined Instagram to keep up with the slew of talent that has migrated there. (https://www.instagram.com/cabinandcottageblog/) So far it is much more fun to visit than to post.

Once again we are using a basic primer/finish paint from Behr rather than a trendy chalk paint. My idea about that stems from authentic old paint like what you find on the antique piece above. You can always tell natural aging of the finish versus a faux one. It's just my preference. And it's my experience that dings and scrapes don't take long to happen naturally!

I found this piece beautiful to begin with. It only needed a bit of sprucing up to the wood finish. But white paint shows off so much more of the wonderful details like these from the headboard shown here and in the previous photos.

The rest of these shots are of the even more decorative foot board.

Here is a teaser of how it looks in the new space. . . . (taken with my camera phone).  See how those details capture the light? Gives me the shivers! I also love the look of that old plastered adobe wall around the window. (White was definitely the way to go.)

The End.

 (Haha! Couldn't resist that.)

Happy Friday! Hope it's a great weekend for you!
