A Wonderful Life

The drought continues in beautiful Santa Barbara, but this morning a brief shower passes through. All the established plants are happy for any drop of moisture.

The desert plants are filling in a few gaps and putting on an exotic show in the meantime. And of course we are happy to visit in any season.

Foggy mornings give way to brilliant afternoons. There are always gorgeous views from Marcia's villa.

It has only been a couple of months since our last visit, but the changes are dramatic. The spring bloom has given way to the challenges of nurturing a bit of garden in hard times. People are even putting "shower water" to good use (the gallon or so that usually runs down the drain while waiting for the water to heat up).

And of course beauty can be found even in harsh conditions if we look for it, and this wonderful house situated in the hills has endless charm, as in these few steps down to the tour of the garden.

The summer days have taken me away from the usual routine, including blogging. But a change of scene always brings a new energy along with it.

Some people call these the dog days of summer, but they are pony days too.

Along with a few tomatoes, the garlic has reached its peak. The heads are spectacular and aromatic.

The squash plants struggle on. But there's no keeping a good gardener down even in the worst of conditions!

These are also melancholy days, as the family's matriarch has recently passed on. She was beautiful and youthful in her ninety-fifth year, and I have written about her often on these pages. She was an inspiration, and spent many hours among her own lovely gardens.

"Don't be sad," she would say often in the last days. "I have had a wonderful life!" And though we know that to be true we are sad now anyway.

A garden stroll is good for reflection. For enjoying each nuance of the seasons. For appreciating life.

I find myself glad for the summer days ahead. For time still left for vacation and visiting family.

For the welcoming doors, and cheering talk, and good laughter.

Wishing you a wealth of sunny summer days ahead too!

Patio In Process

Does your patio ever drive you crazy? Or are you one of those "neat as a pin" people that I envy so much?

Our patio gets stuffed with all kinds of things over time until it reaches a critical mass that demands action. The holiday weekend was a good inspiration for finally getting something done about it.

We are gone a lot in summer so we have to take a low maintenance approach to a patio garden. (I mean besides the fact that we are not gardeners.) So one or two trips to the nursery for plants that can hold their own just being plopped in a cachepot has to do the trick.

This is all usually done in May rather than July, but there you have it!

Ferns under the eaves are very forgiving, and a patio garden basic.

One of the problems we always have is taking care of our outdoor cushions. We have strong sun and monsoon rains on a regular basis and so it's not good to leave it all out. I know there are those giant bins you can buy, but for now I'm going to give this big wicker basket a go.

I am relying on patio sculpture more for interest this year.

I was loving this urn after a good whitewash this year, but my heart broke a little when it had a terrible mishap.

I still like it, and maybe it will get a repair.

A citronella or "mosquito" plant is perfect for patios.

Our herb pots are usually much further along than this, but right outside the door is ideal. Having them close by smells so good!

A little bee balm, a basil variety, and lavender plopped together in an Italian pot.

Parsley, basil, and thyme. These all need their own pots because they really go to town for us!

Love this pink and yellow Lantana for a bit of yummy color.

A few creature comforts (vintage preferred), and we're good to go.

Now if we can just keep it this way!

How about a nice glass of ice tea?

Here's to more Happy Summer Days!

Country Colors

I hope you're having a wonderful Fourth of July weekend! Whether you're having a big or small celebration I hope it's festive for you. We're just grabbing what's easy for the few people we have stopping by.

This vintage tablecloth always comes out in the summer. It's quite old, and so it only gets a workout a couple of times of year. The colors are fresh and lively for a cheery picnic.

I'm thinking red, white, and blue, of course, and happened to have a pot of flowers that fit the bill!

I am using my flower pot napkin rings and pot saucers as coasters for a mini theme. It's the perfect time for mason jars too. These are the reproduction version that seem almost neon colored to me. I like the soft blue vintage kind better but don't seem to have any right now!

Not long ago all of the little girls were here climbing the trees for cherries. They have all scattered in different directions now, and I like thinking about each of them when I sit down to eat at this tablecloth. This setting also makes me feel all "thirties farmhouse" which is a fun feeling for me. The rooster crowing over the fence in the neighborhood helps with that too.

Sitting out under the trees can get you thinking of simpler times. Funny how much we romanticize what had to be such hard times. (The thirties.) But today I just want to feel peaceful and thankful and wish the same for you too!

So glad you had a minute to stop by!
Seems like it's such a busy time for everyone in summer. I know I have been away from the dear old blog for a while myself! But thanks so much for stopping by to say hello!

Happy Days!
