The Time Just Passes

Happy Valentines Day to you! I thought the day needed some pretty, and for me that often means a few linens and a bit of china to look at.

A handful of pretty cards seemed right too.

I love giving away vintage linens as gifts. But I also wanted to show you an old piece of lace that I've had for many years that was made especially for me by my grandmother that I've had put away.

A hundred years ago it seems, I saw this heart pattern in Country Living magazine. My Grandmother used to crochet everyday to relieve the ache and stiffness in her hands, and one day I asked her to make this heart lace edging for me.

My intention was to make a linen tablecloth for this beautiful lace. At the time, I was home raising kids, and doing a lot of sewing and handmade work myself. My sewing machine was always set up in those days.

But not long after this lace was made disaster struck. There was a break-in and my machine was stolen. But that occurred only after we had already lost our house in the downturn of the eighties.

But that was long ago and far away, and tons of water under lots of bridges. Through it all I kept my lace tucked safely away like some pioneer lady trekking in a wagon over the miles and ups and downs of daily wilderness. Time just somehow marched on through our prairie lives. Years passed. My grandmother died. The children all grew up. And I never did return to a sewing machine. But once in a while I brought out the lace, made in a rectangle to my specifications.

I have found a few nice pieces of damask and homespun vintage linen in recent years that would serve nicely for my lace. But all urgency is somehow long gone too. My DIL Emily even gave me a refresher recently on how to thread a sewing machine again. And I wonder if the earth will shake when the time finally comes and lace and material meet after all this time.

It all feels imminent. But I am left to be amazed over how the times just passes. . . .

I hope your week stays sweet!

A Charmed Up Utility Room~Farmhouse Style

I've made a rather dramatic switch from the romance of my last post, to the mundane. It doesn't get more down to earth than a utility room. I was tempted to use the word laundry for this space, but that turns out to be too romantic a word for this eensy space.

We recently replaced our hot water heater, and the change necessitated the removal of a very small freezer that we had in here. It was the smallest freezer on the market (probably in the world), and served us well when the whole family still lived in town. But those days are past.

After the freezer left, I couldn't stand the thought of bringing it back in. We live in a charming little house, but there are tiny rooms, and very little storage. The before picture is below, taken right after the work was finished, and a few things shoved back into the room.

This, was replaced with. . .

...this.
A chippy Canton, Texas table, a wood soap box that I found two days ago, and a fleamarket basket. We're working with some serious backlighting here, so the first thing I did was hang a curtain.

Two nails, and a netted lace runner later. . . .

Voila!

The curtain shields a bad view, but still lets the sunlight in.

The box will keep loads of stuff on hand while giving me that time travel feeling. But I wish I could keep plants here.

I'd love to do a table skirt at some point. I could hide even more away under here.

For now, the basket stows paper products that we buy in large quantities.

It's dressed up with a lace edged valance from the thrift store.

There's a lot of wall space to dress up too if I want.

I found this wonderful old jar for in here the same day. I love the rusty old clasp.

The glass lid is turning purple.

If I squint my eyes a little against the light I can imagine I'm in an old farmhouse.

A real tiny one. . . .

Thanks so much for coming by for a peek!
I appreciate you stopping by to say hello.

Old Romance

I love an old romance. The kind in old books or movies, and in the recesses of memory. I love the romance in old things. Found letters, faded fabrics, fragile lace.

A delicate pink flower pressed between antique pages speaks of old romance. And chippy old plates yellowed and crazed with age.

I kept thinking of the name Lavinia Swire with this post. Lavinia turns up this season in Downton Abbey. (The PBS series.) The name Lavinia Swire just trips off the tongue, and conjures up Edwardian ladies, and tragic love. It makes you want to write a novel just so you can invent a name like hers.

Lavinia would be at home with a rose strewn cloth at tea. This one is of quite a bit later vintage though.

But someone is always pouring tea at Downton. That's reason enough to tune in on a Sunday night. That, and romance. . . .

This is the reverse side of the lady cup.

I hope you're enjoying the season of romance.
