Time Out for Liz

I own one Liz Taylor film. The brilliant and brutal marathon of a movie "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."  It's mean and funny and not the kind you can recommend to just anyone, but it is pinnacle Liz. The nesty professor's house is a bibliophiles dream, but the scenes ensure that you can never feel at home. I'll pull it out again as my small tribute to the fascinating legend now gone.

For an interesting and informed discussion of Elizabeth Taylor's role as Martha in this film see Michael Herbertson's blog Signature Roles for his current post.

Ciao! for now!

  1. Would you believe I've never seen that movie? My favorites are Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Giant and A Place In the Sun. I bet we get to see an Elizabeth Taylor marathon this weekend, if not before. I'll try to catch WAOVW then. I've always loved her and it did my heart good to know she struggled with her weight too. It already feels empty knowing she's not out there somewhere.

  2. I caught small bits and pieces of the movie once...not sure why I didn't sit down and watch the entire thing...but I was impressed. I will really miss Liz. I wish her life had went a little more smoothly, but at least it was full of love.

I guess I make three that have never seen it, but, after I saw your post I watched a trailer and can't wait to see it!

  4. I always admired her steadfastness as a friend . I remember when she joined Maureen O'Hara in asked Congress for a medal for John Wayne.

  7. I haven't seen her later movies but I love Father of the Bride and A Place in the Sun...she was soooo gorgeous! She was always so sickly I guess I never expected her to actually die:( Truly a loss...

  8. See, what news you can learn from blogging. I didn't know she was gone. What a beautiful, elegant woman. Truly, one of the most gorgeous ever. This is a great one. I love her young movies, where her eyes just jump off the screen.

  9. A marvelous actress, Elizabeth - I loved her in Cleopatra.
I'm sure the television will be flooded with her movies now and what better way to remember her?

  10. A Place in the Sun was my favorite. Thank you for posting a tribute for Liz. She was such a stunning starlet and just an incredibly strong woman. The world is a little less bright without her.

  11. She was amazing in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, wasn't she? I don't want to be a guest in George & Martha's house though. I don't think I could play their "Get the Guests" & other after party games!
