Kitchen Basics


We have a small kitchen so I know about all the modern inconveniences. But I'm still attracted to the eensy basic kitchens found in French or Italian apartments. They seem to still have everything necessary for the gourmand. How much room is really required for fresh bread, cheese, fruit and veggies, and a good wine? And what about those gorgeous kitchens in which every item looks as though it was acquired at an antiques market in France?




When you buy market fresh, and unpackaged food, a lot less room is needed. You end up with more room for those kitchen antiques!


A few basic kitchen towels.







A French glass measuring cup.










American feed sack.


Classic white canisters.







Olive wood spoons from Spain.

Lots of storage in my lower cupboards. I have another dresser sideboard in the conservatory/sunroom. And a leaded glass English cupboard in the snuggery. The enormous cupboard below is way too big for the room, but I couldn't live without the storage!

    I have a very small galley kitchen, but manage to cook up many happy memories in there. I do swoon over some of the kitchens I see here in blogland though, ones that can fit more than one person at a time in them! :)

    Oh, I love that glass measuring cup! And, of course, the stack of lovely linens. Almost would make me want to go cook or bake, but much prettier to just admire!

    I adore vintage linens too, especially the French Country Style and Vintage Tablecloths from the 1920-1950 eras. That French Measuring Cup is quite unique, I don't believe I've ever seen one quite like it! You have a great collection and it made a beautiful vignette.

    Not much vintage in my kitchen but from my use of it. I would never use those beautiful tea towels.They are too lovely.

    Simple, classic, elegant. I wish we had daily fresh markets and could get fresh bread etc. Sadly we have to make do with supermarkets. Not quite as fresh and certainly not much charm.

    Thanks so much for showing your storage. I do not have a microwave at our yellow house because of space issues and frankly I do not miss it at all. A lot can be cooked and stored in a small kitchen all those small electric gadgets are not needed...except I do love my coffee maker and food processor. One day I hope to have open shelves where my upper cabinets are. I think that opens up a small kitchen.

    Hi J,
    Great kitchen, it has a good homey feel! I have been working on my small kitchen... slowly, because what you said is true little is needed for making real food. It almost seems more of a challange to build a good kitchen and not look all new and built in, you have found a great balance! And like everyone else I LOVE that measuring cup!
