The Olde English Cupboard

I don't change my sideboard all that often. My hutch is more of a display for special collections, while the kitchen shelves and other cupboards are for regular use. So the hutch gets a revamp only when I want a different look. Usually for a change of season.

I've been doing some spring cleaning already. The weather has something to do with it, I'm sure. Scurrying back and forth, sorting and dusting, I feel like a character out of a Beatrix Potter tale. Or Mole at Mole's End with his brooms and dusters.

I've also taken a page or two from Edith Holden as my inspiration. In her Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady of 1906-- another year with an odd winter--, she relates how " the mild winter has brought out the Hazel catkins, wonderfully early. . . ."

Her wonderful watercolors of nature bring the outside in from the cold. I was surprised to see dead leaves rendered on her January pages, thinking that it's more of a fall thing, but that's exactly what's still outside my own window in piles on the ground.

I've been wanting to gather my brown transferware together. Arranging my English cupboard is a bit like doing a puzzle without a picture for a guide. It's all trial and error, fitting bits and pieces here and there. Thinking I need this color here, and that shape there, until it all comes together. And of course there's only so much you can include.

I have fresh shelf trim. The eyelet was given to me by my friend Ann Baird. The rest is a jumble of finds, some recent, some older, and all vintage.

A few things stayed put, like my famous prize cow butter dish. I guess I'm not tired of looking at it yet. . . .

Who would want a life without handles and spouts? . . .

One down. . . . so many to go. But spring is still a long way off! Not that I EVER finish cleaning. Thanks so much for stopping by. I recieved many truly wonderful e-mails and comments in recent days, and I'm still catching up. What day is it anyway?? (Just kidding. . .  haha. . . . . sorta.)

My best to you, my friends,
Jacqueline

  8. "Who would want a life without handles and spouts?" NOT I! What a beautiful cupboard transformation this week, Jacqueline. Funny you mentioned the dead Winter leaves... I used some in my tablescape this week after walking in the woods and realizing that they DON'T just "say" Fall... I'm so glad you're enjoying this new phase of life -- and sharing it with us!

  10. I always want to reach in and touch your dishes; hold them up to the eye and feel their edges. That little tea-cup is one I look forward to seeing in your posts. I am crazy for the covered dishes and the brown transfer-ware is so beautiful. I'm going back to look at it all again. ;-) Deb

  11. You must really enjoy "playing" with all your dishes and linens and you certainly have the gift of artfully displaying them. I have a copy of the same book you featured and for years displayed it open to the current month.

  18. Love your linens, dishes and I am crazy for the cow/butter dish. I just noticed the little teapot with a wheat shaft on it. I bought a pot like it at the goodwill last summer. It didn't have a lid....but hey it was only 2 dollars. Smiles, Susie (She Junks)

  43. Your cupboard looks lovely! The brown transferware is especially fitting for these winter days. I, too, love Edith Holden's diary entries and water colors. One year I followed her diary by reading the entries on the corresponding days and months they'd been written. It was a lovely exercise and kept me close to the earth and nature all that year.

  55. Your blog speaks to my heart! This cupboard of linens and ironstone and brown transfer ware is divine and inspiring. I too have the same book by Edith Holden, the fluer de lis brown transfer ware cup and saucer is similar to mine, and the butter pot with the cow handle...over the moon. And below I see Sybil, Mary and Edith form Downton Abbey...my all time favorite Masterpiece series. Thank you...I shall visit often.
