Tea with Canaletto

September seems to be the time of the year for finding your quiet center. For the editors of Victoria Magazine anyway. And maybe they're right. If you have a family, everyone goes back to routine, and maybe there is a pause for retreat and reflection before the fall and winter marathon sets in.

September is always a wise travel season as well. The weather is still mild and the good airfare and hotel rates kick in. So a retreat, even a small one, sounds pretty good.

But if you can't actually go anywhere, there are many ways to get off to indulge yourself for a bit. The 1997 September issue holds the key to just that inside.

Catherine Calvert wrote A Day of Solitude in this issue, and it is one of the most lovely things written anywhere:

"Solitude is a beautiful word. It sounds like sunlight through trees, or a walk on the beach, or a soprano voice that soars.... It's a different word than "alone;" I hear a moan in alone, which turns so easily into "loneliness,".... Solitude is for those with an ample interior, with room to roam, well-provided with supplies. And I need a day or two, every so often, to make the journey."

Maybe there's only time for a quiet spot of tea to center yourself.

For Teacup Tuesday I'm featuring a teacup and saucer that seemed more suited to fall than summer. I'm no reader of marks so I'm showing you instead. But Bell seems to be the manufacturer rather than the pattern name of this English Bone China. I just know that I love it.

Another thing I love about this issue is the Favorite Things section on the WRITTEN WORD. There are so many lovely ideas for bookish and writing people, and those of us who love script. It's just one bundle of gorgeous stuff!

Having a little writing corner with a few of those delights is another way to take a small retreat, even if all you ever do is have your tea there!

Here's wishing you a sweet retreat!
Thanks for stopping by! Ciao! for now!

  1. What a beautiful post today!! For many years I collected those old Victoria magazines.....but somehow over the years they have all been culled....boy do I regret that move now. Beautiful pics and such a lovely quote.

    Have a beautiful day,

  2. What a lovely post. I particularly enjoy seeing that post-cards lovingly sent from far-away countries have enjoyed a second- and third-life on the cabin and cottage walls. I recently finished cataloging some Canaletto drawings at work and it is a treat to see him in your post today!

  7. Hello, Jacqueline,
I think we all need some solitude from time to time. Time to regroup and collect ourselves and meditate on things of beauty. Your tea cup is certainly beautiful, and yes, it reminds me of autumn, too. I love the older issues of Victoria Magazine. They were truly the best. Happy Tea Time to you, friend~Vicki

  11. What beautiful words you shared with us. I do appreciate good writing, as I was a Professional Writing major in college. I appreciate pretty tea cups too. And anything you write as well. (What on earth is wrong with Blogger? I just typed this and it erased it.)

  18. Dear Jacqueline,
Beautiful post, as always. Love that gorgeous teacup! I was wondering who your commenter "David" was---oh! he's your David! How nice is that!
I was so lucky last week! I went to a nearby antique store and found 6 copies of Victoria that I was missing. I've been loving the June 91 that I got, but, like it or not, fall is coming (or is here), so your post was very inspirational. I got out my Sept 97 issue, and you are so right. It is just lovely. Later this evening, I will peruse it while the rain pours outside and I wrap up in my soft, white chenille spreads.
    Love, Kay
