I haven't done a tablescape since the holidays. But it seems like the table hasn't been cleared off since then. Having house guests last weekend pulled me out of my post holiday stupor, and pushed me the rest of the way to action.
Not that there's much action involved in a family style buffet done in the classic, simple, French tradition. And that's the beauty of it.
A cozy matelasse cover underneath sets the tone. Elegant, yet unfussy. I love a thick table cover that reduces the clatter of the tableware. (That's just my holiday hangover speaking, I guess--haha) Children on scene keep the decibels high enough.
This super casual supper is served in a big tureen with a platter for a cover in place of the one missing. I could even have put the crescent rolls that the little girls made on top.
An old wooden spoon for a ladle lends a French farmhouse mood as it lays on a thick vintage towel standing ready for drips or spills. I think being ready for anything adds to the romance. But that's just me.
A French pewter jam pot transcends centuries.
Hefty vintage ironstone mugs are hard to turn over accidentally. Bowls are Williams-Sonoma.
Family style meals need big spoons and large linen napkins.
Supper is ready quicker than you can say "hot buttered rolls with jam"! . . .
Are things back to normal for you now too?
I'm probably the last one.
Stay cozy!
Jacqueline

Oh how beautiful and serene in white! I love that you used a platter for a missing tureen lid...What a great idea! And yes the croissants would stay nice and warm. I've passed up many a beautiful tureen because of a lost lid....I'll certainly look at it differently from now on *winks* Vanna
ReplyDeleteLovely as usual. That's not just any platter standing in as a tureen lid, that's a beautiful work of art! Dianne
ReplyDeleteI am in love with the all white tablescape Jacqueline! Every thing about it is elegant. I also LOVE your beautiful wood kitchen pieces. Gorgeous!

I agree, that wooden spoon is Lovely with the hook at the end. Beautiful white table you've set. I agree, romantic as well!
ReplyDeleteI just posted about breaking a small tureen's lid! I NEVER thought I'd find a solution so quickly! I'm off to my cupboard to see what "fits"!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Using the platter is just genius. You are far too smart. Someone is watching this blog and something is going to happen I just know it. We are back to normal. As normal as we get anyway shuffling from house to house but we love it and are happy.
ReplyDeleteYour table setting proves that a table can be beautiful as well as functional. I just love all the white stoneware and the linens. So pretty.

Well...the public areas are back to normal, but the back rooms are still piled high with goodies waiting to be organized for the next year. I'm always a sucker for matelasse, and I love your remedy for the missing tureen lid. Thanks for inviting us for a peak. Cherry Kay
ReplyDeleteEverything is just so beautiful! You have some wonderful collections.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! I have started collecting white dishes/iron stone lately. You certainly have some beautiful pieces!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite things are: that you left your lovely old furniture pieces unpainted wood against the white walls, instead of painting them like everyone else in blogland does, that wooden ladle (LOVE it!), and the little pewter pot.
ReplyDeleteI love the mattlasse table cover. And I see that beautiful English sideboard in the background too. It looks lovely. I hope you can breathe a sigh of relief from entertaining for a bit. Hugs, Pamela
ReplyDeleteThat first pic just charmed me! Cozy, endearing, pretty spot that is so relaxing to gaze at.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
The matelasse for me is the frosting. I just love the look it gives the whole setting.

ReplyDeleteDo you have any idea of the maker/pattern of the creamy white plate you are using as a lid for the tureen? I have the same plates and would love to know anything about them.
I love white. But I really love white with wood.I think the combination is stunning. And add a little lace to that just adds more charm and softness.

I can't keep my eyes off that little pewter jam pot! He's so little, but he really caught my eye!! This is a beautiful way to serve a meal. Buffet style doesn't have to mean "herd 'em in and let 'em have at it!". It can mean fabulousity...like this!!! :-) I hope all is well in your world, Jacqueline! Have a good weekend!
