We took to the woods again yesterday. This time for nothing more than to gather up the sights and scents of fall. And I mean that literally. Baskets of pine cones, weeds, and branches smell odorous wonderful, and dress up the corners of a room with the matchless opulence of nature.
A few russet oak branches make me feel as though the fineries of the forest are all the luxury I might need for a season. I am always envious of the large branching bouquets I see in photos of gorgeous rooms, and the offerings of the impossibly large and dramatic displays at Pottery Barn. You have to actually have an oak tree (or whatever) readily available (I don't), or a pretty big budget! And in the end, an imitation doesn't feed my soul in quite the same way.
A copper trophy cup adds to the autumn tones. . . .
For the moment my branches are propped inside a paint splattered vintage crate that I brought home from the flea market that also holds logs for the fire. A rustic window pane from another market mimics the color.
A trio of just painted mirrors cure while making a pretty vignette.
One of them hangs on a wooden door.
A French style mirror in an ornate gold frame is getting the latest tryout over the mantel.
It's amazing how a few fall leaves can warm up a room.

I love how you brought the branches inside and where you placed them...I do that too. Now they should last you 'til Christmastime...when, if you're like me, you'll be outside clipping evergreens and other branches! Aren't the natural elements SO much more satisfying and soul-touching than ANYTHING you can buy from craft stores and the like?

We have hundred year okd oak trees in the park i walk in every day. One year i brouggt the branches and acorn shells in to decorate only to discover weeks kater little larva type worms were everywhere. Yuck! Never again. Now i just admire their beauty in the park and bearby mnts.

I do the same thing.. bring the fall inside. It's such a short "period" here in Lubbock, that if you don't preserve it, you might miss it if you blink. Which woods? How wonderful you can do that. ReplyDeleteI remember growing up we had big old oak trees, hickory nut trees, pecan and Magnolia. How I miss them. When they develop the new neighborhoods they chop all those magnificent trees down and leave us with pine...ugh!

ReplyDeleteOh, your leaves looks beautiful, Jacqueline. Such a simple thing but it truly brings Autumn into the house. And everything else about that mantle looks so pretty. (I have an old rectangular french-style gilt mirror that was my grandmother's. It weighs a ton so I've always been nervous about hanging it. But you've inspired me to try!) I had to write again to say that I found the loveliest branch in the garden that had fallen from my maple tree. It was covered in brightly hued leaves -- too pretty to toss aside. So I hung it on my back doorway to greet visitors. You inspired me!! :)
