Seedy, Weedy, Woodsy August

It's still bright and hot here, but it's no question that we are now turning toward another season. I love summer, and so it makes me a little melancholy. But the end of summer is really one of our best times of the year, and especially out on the patio.

Tablescapes this time of year take on a different tone and color for me. My weedy arrangements are more in character. The ambers feel more at home, and the greens turn to olive.

I use this tablecloth only at the end of summer when the fields are full of sunflowers and ripened grass. Everything is still green and beautiful, but the colors have taken on a more golden glow.

We just spent some time in the woods. A wonderful thing to do in August. The kids love gathering acorns, and wildflowers are everywhere. Getting into nature made me think of my Audubon prints, and wanting to use them on a table.

These scripty napkins are perfect with my tablecloth too.

But if I were using a plain tablecloth, these vintage prints would make nice place mats or markers this time of year. I wouldn't use the originals, of course. Since they came in sheets in a box, they are easy to reproduce on a copier.

I'm not ready for full-on fall decor, and these prints seem more transitional to me with their colorful birds, and still green leaves.

A mix of vintage white china quiets the palette.

But I enjoy the off whites better this late in the season, as in this oatmeal colored homespun tea cloth.

It's the perfect time of year for a wheat motif on the teapot too!

My white Royal Albert creamer and sugar bowl is trimmed with gold, and makes for a nice transition. As much as I hate letting go of the warm season that I love, I have also had thoughts of the pleasures that lie ahead. . . .

Even though it's already the middle of August, I have just started peeking into my old August issues of Victoria Magazine for inspiration. They have some of my favorite covers with their suggestion of bounty and rich color. This one is from 1998.

.

The covers were inspiration for the color and botanical tone of  my tablescape. I need that gorgeous french print quilt though!

And did you hear me mention a GIVEAWAY?

I found that I have two issues of this beautiful cover from 1994! That's almost twenty years ago folks! That's a long time ago, but just have a look at how classic cottage style can be in the following pages from this issue.

Let me know in a comment if you would like to enter to win a copy. I will draw a winner next week! Good luck!

I hope you're enjoying a lovely amber August. . . .
I love to hear from you!
Thanks so much for stopping by!

Jacqueline

  1. Your lovely tablescape has really captured these gorgeous golden days of late summer! Everything is so pretty - the china, the linens, the woodland flowers. You have me inspired to bring some of that beauty inside. I love Victoria Magazine and have every issue since it first started, so you don't need to enter me in the giveaway. Isn't it amazing how timeless it is? Enjoy these golden hours and thank you for sharing your beautiful table. Hugs xo

  2. Your china and linens are so pretty. I feel the same way about this time of the year. It is still summer, but our thoughts go to fall. I am a fan of Victoria Magazine and would love to have my name entered in our giveaway.

  3. I love Victoria magazine, but I rarely buy magazines anymore because I just don't have a place to store them and I hate to toss them. I read more mags on my Ipad lately.

It is so funny that everyone is talking about summer ending when it hasn't quite begun on our part of the coast. September and October are our sunniest and warmest months.

  6. I like the prints, they have possibilities and the wheat on the teapot is perfect for late summer. The change to amber and bronze hues in autumn adds warmth to the countryside and my garden. The big patches of goldenrod glow along our south side.
Victoria has inspired so many women and I love looking back over old issues too. I don't have the issue from your giveaway and would like a chance to win it please.

  9. Your pics are always so beautiful.

I agree with you about holding onto summer as long as possible - I am just not ready for fall yet!!!!

I would LOVE to win that copy - thank you so much for the opportunity.

Guess what? Very recently a very large box of my past fav copies of Victoria and Tea Time were thrown out with the trash in error.

    Gulp.

Um, I am trying not to think of it too much, but I get this knot in the pit of my tummy every time it comes to mind. I need to just let it go, but those things are precious to people such as we!

  10. oh at first I thought you were giving away a teacup set you have there and I thought 'oh no! NO one can give one of those away'! phew...close call, I thought you'd lost it LOL....but would you believe I had all of the first 3 years of Victoria's issues in their magazine cases, and gave them away! I could hit myself, because more than 20 years later I'm wanting them all back and it is not possible. Yes, I would like to win that issue...your pics are gorgeous, I always say, but I will never stop. Your table is wonderful, as the Tazo tea good?

  12. Hi Jacqueline, we're back from vacation and I finally got to see one of your blog posts. This is so pretty and a nice transition into the month of September which is not too far away now. It's amazing how the cottage style is so timeless. The old Victoria magazine cover is so pretty and could be this month's issue. I'd certainly enjoy reading it. Blessings, Pam

  13. I love Victoria magazine, but I had to give away all my old ones when I moved from a house to a tiny apartment. Downsizing always calls for some tough decisions, but I'm hoping those magazines are bringing a little cheer to everyone in the doctor's office waiting room where they now reside. Please enter me in your draw. Thanks! (new email address is sylvanwood-studio(at)bell.net)

  14. I like this: "Amber Autumn"! The prints, creamy dishes and subtle peeks of wheat and golden colors give us a little feel of what is just around the corner. Since summer came so late for us here in the Midwest, and we've had more cool days than hot, I feel I need more summer. It's not so much the weather, but rather that uplifting, light and airy feeling that carries you along day to day, the sun overhead and the breeze at your back. I just love summer!

What a very sweet giveaway! I've never read this magazine, in fact, I just recently got a copy of Jeanne D' Arc Living and I am really enjoying it! Thank you and please drop my name in the hat! :)

    XO,
    Jane

Love your pics, so beautiful and inspiring. I like that Amber August....for us in the northeast, it will be Amber September, summer isn't over yet!!!
