Safari Tablescape

It's easy for me to get a little theatrical where Africa is concerned. But I only meant to celebrate the arrival of the warm season here in the high desert. We can play with a tropical theme, but the air stays dry and more comfortable than that. Under the shade of trees, and with a little breeze, you can imagine you hear the surf, or will yourself a little closer to the Indian Ocean. . . .

Salad plates are melamine from Pottery Barn where you can find a whole bunch more of this theme-y stuff. They definitely have that backyard party vibe.

The tropics call for white. And lots of it!

I wanted languid and drapey.

The plate has two print versions. The script made me a little giddy.

Shell season is back! A pedestal inside a bowl of shells gives me the height I want for the centerpiece.  Stack plates, or serve a big yummy dish!

This safari cookbook by Yvonne Short is full of all kinds of inspiration for menus, settings, and outdoor tables.

This is as wild as the animals are getting today.

An antique wire store display shelf works as a makeshift sideboard to eliminate steps to the house.

Vintage map case.

Did anyone think to bring the gramophone. . . ?
So much for table-escaping this week!
Thanks for coming along!

  19. Dear Jacqueline,
    Congrats on your Sunshine award..
Thea from Hearts and Bluebels gave me one.
Sunshine is being spred all around.
I do look forward to reading your posts.
Your post today, brought a smile to my face.
My father used to wear the pith helmet sometimes as a young man working out in the sun. How did you upon the helmets. I have never seen them since leaving Africa. Reading down.. I thought there might have been a photo of RR.! Yes, next to the gramaphone.!

You have set your table so beautiful. The plates are divine and would'nt have known they were melomine.
You even have cushions to match.
    stunning.
    Loved this post
    Happy Thursday Jacqueline.

  20. An award well-deserved, Jacqueline! This lovely setting under the trees is just so beautiful and evocative. ("I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills..") It struck such a wistful longing in me and just made me smile and smile. I hope you enjoyed your day in the dappled sunshine.

  23. Love love those plates! Of course the hat is the crowning touch. I too love a table draped in white. Just makes it seem somuch cooler than it really is! The linens are extremely pretty. I love your green and white cushions.. my favorite shade of green. “The Cicada sing an endless song in the long grass, smells run along the earth and falling stars run over the sky, like tears over a cheek. You are the privileged person to whom everything is taken. The Kings of Tarshish shall bring gifts.”
    Gorgeous table indeed!
Congrats on the award.. you are my daily dose of sunshine! xo marlis

  29. Seriously....I switched to a British accent in my mind as I was reading this!!!!!!! I had to stop myself and get back to my middle American half drawl!!!! This is such a beautiful setting, Jacqueline! It has all the makings of a warm day with a welcome breeze whilst you sip drinks with forbidden names! Oh, my goodness! I don't think I've ever seen a map bag before...although possibly in "Titanic", but I'm not sure. It's pretty cool. Has that rugged, Ralph Lauren look. Everything about this setting is tranquil and beautiful. Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Your have certainly captured the desert theme. One can't help but think of Out of Africa. Very well done. It has a very refined rugged look, if that makes sense. The white stirs the imagination to think of the heat of the desert and the heavy warm breeze. The leather map bag and desert hat are fabulous. Someone mentioned the RL look and that is exactly the look you have captured. Wonderful!

  36. Oh, Jacqueline, your tables are always among my favorites. You had me at pith helmet with this one. :) So clever and so well put together. I like the whole feel of this tablescape, each item carefully chosen. White is always perfect. Those are great candles. PB? I have some similar ones from last year. That vintage map bag is so gorgeous! I am going to see if I can find one for my son, the world traveler and lover of all things old. Thank you for your inspiration. Happy weekend to you!
