When I first began collecting, I could never find a vintage wire dish rack at the price I wanted. It seems like years went by in which I would occasionally see one hanging in a shop and would pine away for it because it made no sense to pay the price when kids needed shoes. And lets face it. There are TONS of handy ways to put a spiffy rack to good use, including drying dishes on it. But it never quite reached beyond mere emotional need. So I waited.
When my days of prowling thrift stores and fleamarkets took off, I was glad I had delayed. That's not to say that these little darlings are easy to find. But when they turn up, they are usually at a fraction of the cost that you find in a shop. I still only have a few.
Here they are leading happy lives of symmetry and order, and cradling some of my favorite white kitchen things. . . .
Like nearly everybody else I also like to collect very old canning jars.
We're almost ninety degrees today, and I'm having a hard time taking care of business. It feels like the weekend, and all I want to do is flit around looking for more great stuff. Spring fever? I do feel a little hot. . . .

I love your old dish racks and how you have your beautiful white dishes in them. I have one of my own that i really enjoy.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwww, just look at those wonderful old dish racks... and i'm pining over those scalloped edged brown transferware plates, they are heavenly

I REALLY Love those too...I saw one recently at GW and didn't get it(OH MY), when I got home and thought about it, I turned around and went back to "FIND IT GONE"! BWAaaaaaaaaa!!! My scanner wasn't quite working right that day! It needed more processing time than I had! GW just seemed to be LOADED that day with treasures and I became OVERCOME and had to leave with only one armful, UGH!!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE your display in your photos. It's NOW fashionable to leave our pretty dishes OUT for all to see!
Big Hugs,
Donna
I think I need to find a vintage wire dish rack because I still wash dishes the old-fashioned way, by hand! I've got a new stainless steel dish rack, but it doesn't quite have the charm of the old ones. You have so many lovely dishes and flatware to store in yours.
ReplyDeleteThey are perfectly and happily situated in your world, Jacqueline.
ReplyDeleteGreat finds, glad you waited too!
i juist LOVE old wore dish racks too! I have 2 of my own...1 organizing "stuff" in the studio..the other in the kitchen (imagine THAT!) Loving the vignettes in YOURS! (Pinning away....) ;)
ReplyDeleteYour vintage dish racks are lovely! I have one I found on Etsy, perfectly rusty and fits in my sink to a T so no water gets on the counter...I hand wash all our dishes so I was able to justify the cost as a necessity:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a good idea. I just bought a plastic rack to store my baking tins separately and another to store my trays. It would have been so much cheaper to look for second hand wire trays. Thanks for the idea. Joan
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. Love the shot with the starfish on top of the plates.
ReplyDeleteYou have truly inspired me today.Lots of ideas.Love those vintage wire rack. You have given me hope that I too will run across one of those.Pretty dishes too.And the sewing machine drawers painted LOVE it.Have a great day.

Such charming pictures....many of my favorite things as well! I also crazy over the napkins? Are they old? I would love to find some.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Susie

ReplyDeleteOh how we love the same things.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting a pretty wire dish rack too and haven't found one....yet.
Love all the pretties you are showing today. Swoon....

I like the way you are using old sewing machine drawers. Very neat.
ReplyDeleteJacqueline: Those old wire racks are great for displaying your china and such. Do you have room to set them up all the time or just use them for photo ops? They look very beautiful however you use them..Happy Tuesday..Judy
ReplyDeleteIt's the simple things. A wire dish rack is one of those things. I find peace in standing in front of the sink and gently washing dishes.
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of the dish rack my grandmother used to have, Jacqueline. :) Sweet memories! xoxo laurie

Sweet pictures...total eye delight!
They are so useful and look so good filled with vintage china. Sounds like your weather is very hot for Spring. Keep cool xxx
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to keep pretty china in an old dish rack - I love those scalloped dishes and the brown transferware.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure! Don't you think the food tastes even better eaten from old porslin and with lovely old worn out knives and forks!
ReplyDeleteYour dishracks look in mint condition Jacqueline,
ReplyDeleteGreat that you can still use them.
I love your dishes..they look like salad side plates, lovely and the print is very unusual.
Great photos and super post

ReplyDeleteLove the brown transferware just can't tell if that is a master sugar or set in the bowl as it is a slop jar.(what a terrible name for such a beautiful vessel)
ReplyDeleteSo you like canning jars do you... a wonderful obsession don't you think. There a thousands of old canning jars up here in the Niagara region because of its orchards and Mennonite history. Would you like one?
Susan
Lovely...
ReplyDeleteI just found a round wire dish rack, have only crossed paths with a couple of these over the years. Each time I pay way more than it feels like I should, but I fear walking away without it in my arms.
My will power waivers so....
Kari
Simpler times, simpler ways. Thank you for the beautiful reminder to enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteThose dish racks are wonderful, Jacqueline. I'm glad you were able to find them. It's a perfect way to hold/display your lovely dishes. (And I see that you use old drawers to hold things, too! I have cannibalized quite a few cast-off bureaus just for their drawers!) As always your photos are so lovely. I hope the heat lets up for you. I would be flat on the ground in 90 degrees!?
ReplyDeleteWell these racks were worth the wait, Jacqueline! Your collections never cease to amaze me. These racks have the perfect age and patina to them. Beautiful and functional, too.
ReplyDeleteHappy White Wednesday,
Susan
Hi J,
ReplyDeleteWell you are all stacked and organized.. your ducks (dishes) in a row :-) I yearn for dishracks too, really there must have been millions of them out there, where did they go? You get serious extra points for the silverware basket!!!
Well you are 90 and we are back to 60 and wet boohoo....
Hugs,
Bella
Your photos are just stunning! And I was trying to find a less crass way of saying this but it's all I got: nice racks! Hee!

This is a beautiful post...love the old ironstone!!
ReplyDeleteI love old dish racks. I bought one about 15 years ago and I liked it because it was a large square. Six years ago we installed a small restaurant sink in our kitchen with a square sink. Wouldn't you know it my dish rack fits the sink perfectly! I'm so happy I bought that when I seen it. Oh, and it was only $24. Yeah.
ReplyDeleteYour photo's are lovely!

Love your pretty dish rack! I like the look of pretty plates in them too, and I was looking for one myself. I happened to find a pretty white one in Home Goods. A small one with pretty swirls on the bottom. I will do a post on it one day too!
ReplyDeleteDebbie
Beautiful pictures! Love it all!
ReplyDeleteOh my...such beautiful dishes. Love them in your old dish racks too! Thank you for sharing this... wiping drool off my chin! :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful dish rack displays with some of my favorite things. My very fave is the handles on those wonderful ironstone mugs! Love having you join in on the party. xo
ReplyDeleteLove the vintage dish racks.
ReplyDeleteI would purchase one if I ever run across one, hopefully one of these days.
Oh, the dishes are lovely, too.
