When I was a girl we always got a new outfit for Easter. I remember well that early pleasure of a new fancy dress. The chiffon and delicate fabrics weren't the most practical choice for the picnics our Dad used to take us on after. What seemed like a fine and sunny day in town would have a different character in the breezy countryside. And I remember more than once shivering through the delights of an egg hunt and spring outing.
These days I find a lot of pleasure in dressing up the little girls in vintage white, and always hunt for bigger sizes now that they have grown. This, my most recent find, is about a size five. Still too small for the three tall eight-year-old grand-daughters to wear. But just right for the tiny ones to grow into.
We have our teas on the lawn. There's always a stash of sweaters to throw on in the changeable weather. Some of the little girls beg to play dress up, and others will pass. We dream of having a flowy tent with a pink stripe awning set up all summer. It's fun to be the biggest girl dreaming at the party!

I am jealous. I've never had a special Easter dress. Actually, I didn't have many dresses at all. Reading your post was like dreaming. I am glad those girls have you in their lives. Happy March to all of you!

jacqueline: I can just imagine the little girls in those white dresses. I remember getting a new pair of black patent leather Mary-Jane's for Easter. My mom would polish them with vaseline. Happy March Day...Judy at GoldCountryCottage

What a sweet post, Jacqueline. As the mother of two daughters (never really wanting a son), I love this! However, I've surprised myself by "taking to" my now-2-year-old grandson ... and looking forward in the next few weeks to grandson #2. No granddaughters, and oddly enough, I'm not even missing them. I have officially fallen in love with little boys, but the sweetness of your words and pictures brought back such wonderful memories of my two once-little girls. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI remember getting a new Easter dress too.We did this with our daughter until she grew a little older.She is now 12 and no more is the Easter dress or Easter bunny :-(.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories. I can just picture what you're talking about in my mind. I don't ever recall ever getting a special dress for Easter, not that it would matter anyway, it's usually still cold here at that time of year and I probably would've had to wear a coat over it anyway :)

ReplyDeleteHow sweet that you buy these beautiful dresses for your granddaughters! We have a few "party" dresses for our "balls" but I may think of adding some of these, because I LOVE them! And that pink china with dogwoods (is that what they are)--it is BEAUTIFUL! I'd have a VERY hard time passing that up if I ran across it. ReplyDeleteI thought of you today when I was looking at some vintage white baby clothes at a local shop. Do you photograph the girls dressed all in white for Easter? I can almost see your table all set with some dainty china teacups and the little ones gathered 'round.

ReplyDeleteNew Easter clothes were always such a treat as a child! My grandchildren like to play dress up, too, and it's great fun to find hats and feathers and dresses to buy for their "play trunk".
ReplyDeleteI loved getting my Easter dress each year. I remember the year my father took me shopping for it. I couldn't decide which of two that I liked best, and he let me get BOTH of them! My mother made almost all of our clothes, so it was a fabulous treat to get 2 new dresses at once!

ReplyDeleteHow well I remember...the organza dresses (they were scratchy and made you itch), the lacey gloves, the hats (with that elastic strap that stung your neck), the ruffled stockings and the white patten shoes!!! Some years there were new rain coats and umbrellas!
Jacqueline this post hit all my favorites...roses, ruffles, and rabbits! Although I missed SNOW this year, I will welcome Spring, dear friend!
