Calico Quilt with a Petticoat


I've had Maryjo Koch's beautiful book, Bird Egg Feather Nest (1998), on my book stand for a couple of weeks now. Her illustrations are so wonderful and evocative of the season.




Full of quotes and information next to detailed drawings, it's the perfect thing to get a little inspiration at the start of the day.












I have also been in line of sight of an antique quilt I adopted a short time ago and have had over the back of a sitting room chair since bringing it into the house.




It's a true relic. The back fabric has become brittle and will come apart with the gentlest care in washing. In the old days someone would have made a new backing and placed it right over the original. But it was obviously stored with love and care to this point and deserves a showing.




Because of it's condition, the only way I can ever use it is for display. But for the price of a bunch of market flowers I can appreciate it's charms for as long as I care to.




The constant fight between my mutual urges for white and bright versus deep and muted colors (earthy hues) is on display here too. I have a true emotional response to each. I have a lacy underskirt peeking through as if to say "your slip is showing!" And, well, I guess it is.

    I just love the way you put that white tablecloth underneath the quilt!! I love these earth tones against your whites!!

    I certainly understand about using the quilt for "display only"....I would have to do the same thing.
    Such a charming display, with the white lace below it.

    I meant to say..that I have a number of lovely white Victorian petticoats....what a nice idea for using them. When I had my portrait studio, I used them for the " Vintage Portraits" that I created.
    I know I would have to take them apart, but they are just hanging here in my closet otherwise.
