I got some requests after my last post to see more exterior views of our house here in Albuquerque. We got fresh wet snow overnight, so it was a good opportunity. Without the touches of white the views are far less interesting in winter. Lots of brown everywhere. But that is a chief characteristic of the early homes here in New Mexico which have flat roofs in the "pueblo style" and which were made of mud bricks called "adobe."
We live in a historic district of our community which is more rural and near the Rio Grande River. This view is at the entrance to our circle drive which is coverd in pea gravel.
The front door and main entrance is at left, a center courtyard lies behind the gate, and the carport is at right out of frame.
The garden gate I shot in the previous post is directly ahead in this image.
And here it is again leading to the back yard.
Stepping through to the yard and looking toward the street gives you a view of the roof of our neighbor's house, but also shows the stucco walls which are common for privacy around here. You can also see how quickly the snow melts!
The privacy wall continues along the street side of our home, with openings for the circle drive.
This is our neighbor's home as you see it from one of the driveways. It looks old, but is a recent build in the old style.
The view out of my front door.
The view of the circle drive to the left from the entryway alcove.
We have desert plants because of our dry climate, but snow is not unusul in the winter. We enjoy all four seasons in New Mexico.
The large Spanish Broom is drooping from the center due to the heavy wet snowfall.
Already melting. . . .
A view to the street from the entrance to the driveway where we began.
A view of another neighboring home from this end of the circle drive. I envy the row of Russian Olive trees that line our neighbor's drive.
Our mailbox is embedded in the stucco adobe wall to the left, and I have this view down the street every time I collect the mail. The home you see at the end is on the historical register. Also at that corner is a home which was the first schoolhouse (I own a salvaged gate from it), and another which was the jail in the village where we live. Our own property lies within the vast boundaries of land once owned by a founding ancestor in New Mexico. Truly my hometown.
I hope you enjoyed getting a view of the street where I live! It will be nice when it is all leafy green again!
Hasta la vista!
(so long)
Hope it's a great weekend for you!
Jacqueline

I went to 1st grade in Albuquerque. I am now in my 60's. We lived on Forest Ave. in old town. I have very fond memories of my life there and have enjoyed seeing your posts. Brings back all those wonderful memories. Thank you. Nelda
ReplyDeleteOh Jacqueline, I am in love with the vibe and beauty of your home, and have stored up in my head what it looked like outside and your exterior when you would post little bits of it here and there.
ReplyDeleteI am also inspired that you when with your white look, rustic salvage, and oh so euro chic, rather then the typical design style of a Santa Fe style, or New Mexico with the strong infulance of ethnic to its territory. Although I could see a wool muted in tone Spanish style rugs or throws in your mix of beauty.
I love the climbing vines, dried and bare as much as when in its seasoned bloom of green and colour. Your gate is perfectly weathered of old, the kind of gate we all want to salvage carry home and hang on our walls or of use somewhere.
Thank you for the frost bit snow morning here, I so wish I woke to this rustic beauty.
Xx

Hello Jacqueline how lovely to see where you live, all so different to where I live. this is what a love about blogging we all find out the different ways of living.
ReplyDeleteWhat a uniquely gorgeous area you live in! I'm so glad you shared the pictures of your neighborhood. It was like a mini virtual vacation! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous. My favorite kind of home. I went to school on the border of Arizona and New Mexico, so I know certain places in New Mexico well. I love the homes along the Rio Grande. My spouse sometimes works in Santa Fe, so when we can tag along we do. Someday I hope to find a small one, somewhere, and care for it.
ReplyDeleteLovely home, love the Adobe style. Does your home have the Saltillo tiles too? Love the garden gate. At one time, I had all Southwestern style decor in my home and still have some original paintings from Arizona artists. I can't part from them. Hopefully I will still use them when I am on my new house hunt this fall. Thanks for sharing your lovely home.
ReplyDeleteTo Kelly at Coastal Cottage Dreams:
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Our floors are red brick, also commonly found in older adobe homes here.
Magical, beautiful, unforgettable photos of your lovely home. I enjoyed the tour--it brightened my day.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tour of the outside of your home. It is so interesting to see the style of homes with walls and gates and adobe which is common to your area. It would be nice to see the same scenes in summer when all is green and blooming. Enjoy your weekend.
ReplyDeleteYour home is lovely inside and out! Thank you for sharing its beauty with all of us!

Dear Jacqueline, Thank you, thank you for sharing views of the exterior of your home and street.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy having a peek into the different style homes and locations that we live.
The adobe style always brings back fond memories of the year we lived in San Miguel Mexico 1970-71.
It is very nice that you can experience the four seasons - but not for such prolonged dull days as we have in Vancouver BC Canada.
regards Janine

ReplyDeleteOH FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE! The things you learn by blogging! Thank you so much, Marjon. I had never heard this song by Neil Young before. We really are this "down beat" around here. Haha! If anyone else wants to hear it here's a link on YouTube:

Your home reminds me of my favorite houses in Santa Fe. I remember walking past so many beautiful gates and loving the summer colors of adobes with lavender.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
How wonderful! It's always a treat to visit Albuquerque and Santa Fe to view the great architecture -- so unique from anywhere else in the country. I'll enjoy it vicariously through you! Thanks for sharing. Sally
ReplyDeleteThank you for this marvelous outside tour. I love New Mexico's unique style, especially when there is snow to contrast against all the brown. Reminds me of brown transferware in reverse. Ha!
ReplyDeleteStay warm and enjoy the snowfall. It's rain fall here!
Your home and neighborhood are dream-like to me. The Pueblo style is something I love. The stucco walls ...sigh. Everything, everything is beauty to me. Feels like home.
ReplyDeleteMy father grew up in Yuma, AZ.and now that he is retired, lives there with my mom during the winter months as 'snowbirds' in their motorhome. My great grandmother was Native American so I have the desert life in my blood.
Thank you for sharing your neighborhood with us...it looks like such a peaceful, down to earth way of life. Something I highly value.
Wow this was really cool to see ...as I have never traveled too far.....so peaceful and lovely
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing Lorraine
I love it! Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful. I love the unique style, perfectly fit into the area and the historical sense of the Southwest.
ReplyDeleteI'm so very glad you shared the exterior and yard of your lovely home. There is something about adobe I simply adore -- there is a warmth to it and a great, simple beauty. Your neighborhood looks lovely and how wonderful to be in a historic area. Thanks for sharing this. I like seeing it very much.
ReplyDeleteI love the style of your home. It would be fun to see a town like yours. I like the snow.
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoyed the "walk around" your pretty home in its winter splendor.
ReplyDeleteI am - again- having a tough time imagining New Mexico with snow. I always thought it was always hot hot hot.
I love you have such rich history there and you can go way back to founding fathers. That is just too cool.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this wonderful tour....I've tried to imagine what your home looked like on the outside after seeing the gate and some of the wall. It's so beautiful....I love the bare branches and vines, so graceful.....beauty is not just in color but form and shape. The little bit of snow is magical......xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteI feel like I just took a trip back home, Jacqueline! I'm guessing since you are near the RG, but still in ABQ., you must live in the North Valley, which is just a hop, skip and jump from my old house in Corrales. I love our current home in Illinois, but I still miss the mountain view we had in our old home. Thanks for sharing the lovely outside tour of your home!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited to have an exterior tour of your house!! So old world and storybook!! A very different world from here... except for that grey sky, now that looks homey to me:-) The patina of the adobe the big old trees... and that gate must lead to another world, Truly Delightful! and nothing short of amazing to have live on "Family Estate".
ReplyDeleteThanks for the look around!!
Oh and I want some snow...
Hugs!
Jacqueline, thank you for sharing these additional views of your home. I love the architecture of this area and could walk around neighborhoods for hours taking pictures of the gates and windows in this style of home. I'm in South Central Texas and our favorite trips to take are to Santa Fe, which is our base as we travel to the surrounding areas, including ABQ. We've not yet gone in winter, but it's something we'd like to do, just for a change of pace. If we could pack up and move, this is where we'd go, it has seeped into our souls that much.
ReplyDeleteWintry beauty...love your home & architecture...so peaceful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Kari
I've been feeling home-sick for Phoenix a lot lately and even missing the loooong drive back home--Midwest to southwest! I love driving through all the beautiful mountain terrain!
ReplyDeleteSeeing the beautiful architecture of your home made me feel even mOre melancholy (sigh). Beautiful, beaUtiful home,
Catherine
Love your beautiful home Jacqueline. Love your arched entry way to the courtyard. I bet in the summer it is so pretty. We are in a blizzard here in Chicago land. 14 inches of snow and it is still coming down. Stay warm by you. Thanks for the lovely tour of your sweet home.
ReplyDeleteKris
Jacqueline, your home has a beautiful style and looks so pretty with the snow. Looking at the pictures makes what we see inside just that much more interesting. It is quite a contrast yet each part is so beautiful in its own right..Happy Weekend..Judy

ReplyDeleteI love the outside of your home and I bet it is gorgeous when everything is green.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to see where you live. It is such a different feel from most neighborhoods and I love it. Now you know we will want to see it again when everything is green. Thanks for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteYour home is wonderful, Jacqueline. Adobes have so much character. It's one of our favorite architectural designs and we gave serious consideration to buying one in Taos. I think you're very blessed.
ReplyDeleteI love to be able to picture the inside and outside of your home together now!
