Cottage Green

We don't celebrate St. Patrick's Day in a big way, but we do love our Irish! And I love the color green. It came as a small surprise to me to realize how little of the color I use in my decorating. Aside from house plants and flowers with their deep leafy green, I found that green is a minor accent color for me.

But green is a natural for cottage and garden style in all its different hues. One of my favorite ways to enjoy green is to do a search for green on Pinterest. I don't pin, but I do follow pinners and boards. Saves a ton of time over saving things myself. Sometimes just scrolling through the green gives me a big lift! There is a green board that I enjoy by Vintage Sunday here, And another by Deborah Browning here.

Not surprisingly, I enjoy a bit of green in the linens I collect. Often it's only a hint of color in a print, pattern, or embroidery as in the samples here.

The smallest scrap of a doily is wrapped around a small flat of alyssum straight from the nursery to the center of the table before it finds its way to the garden.

This antique sage green quilt is a prized possession more often used for display than on a bed. I don't want it to work too hard at its age!

Or used for a special event like this Easter tablescape.

Such a pretty spring color!

The green of the handle and spout make this my favorite watering can.

This pale green pattern on a set of sheets and pillowcases makes for sweet spring dreams.

And a vintage green blanket to toss over.

This delicate Limoges cup and saucer shows my DIL's favorite color combination. But then her birth surname is Green. And her birthday is March 17th. I KID YOU NOT!!!

My SIL gifted me this beautiful English cup and saucer. I adore the mint green color, the hint of rose, and the suggestion of brown transferware. She knew I would love it. And I do!!!

The cover of a vintage copy of one of my most favorite books whose opening pages begin in spring. It is a souvenier of my spring visit to Galway in the West of Ireland years ago.

This technique of paint and embroidery combined always reminds me of Mary Englebreit, the Queen of cottage style.

A small antique majolica plate sports a touch of green. (You're seeing a trove of my favs here.)

A quilted applique butterfly flutters across another small spring themed quilt. (I'll have to feature more of this one soon.)

What is cheerier than a bonnet girl in gingham green?

The last bit of vintage green here is a favorite fifties print tablecloth just made for spring and summer.

A vintage green pot of Swedish ivy sits on top.

Pottery Barn grabbed my attention a couple of seasons ago with outdoor pillows and plates with antique graphics and botanicals. And they can hardly wait for their turn in the sun!

The mixed patterns and stripes is classic cottage style.

We are on the verge of patio weather. . .

With the promise of another round of lawn parties to come!

Let there be green!

I hope it's a lovely week ahead for you!

Jacqueline

  6. I do like greens...the green shades in nature. Sage green has been a favorite for most of my life. I used to use it as alot more in my home decor years ago. Now I lean towards the sea greens. I have green eyes. This Spring though I am drawn to the blues...deep and pale blues. We are still in a drought so I think I am yearning for water! Lovely lovely post!

  11. Being a gardener, green is a favorite of mine as well. St. Patty's Day was special in our family, too, because mom always told me that was the day I became their daughter (I was adopted). Sure do adore your favorite picks!

  21. Oh Jacqueline, green was the colour I only saw in my design decor when english cottage and Victorian country was all the design trend. I have weeded it out and too, on putty shades and whites as my main colours....yet I do find myself longing for some colour again and a suble mix of it.

You introduce colour in a big way, quietly easing it in where one may not even notice with your back drop being white and aged whites. It's such a good and pure colour from nature. It makes sense that one would be drawn to green as you are here in your home.

Everything inspires Spring and Easter is that much prettier here because of it.

    Xx

  22. Jacqueline, I am green with envy! I have never seen you use so many greens before, but the timing couldn't be more perfect. Green has never been a big favorite of mine, but in looking through my hoard, or I mean stash, I see a lot of it there. Go figure. I guess there is something enviable in every color and your's are all so beautiful..Happy Wednesday..Judy
