Quilt Weather

A few days more and it will be official. The Autumnal Equinox. But we've already made the transition to cozy sleeping weather.

We will leave the windows open for some time to come, using first one quilt, then two, and finally on to feathers and down. This vintage postage stamp quilt is one of my favorites. It was quite dirty when I found it bound by masking tape in a junk shop. Ten dollars.

I never wait until fall to use my quilts of course. I have several white ones that I use on tables and furniture all year long.  This one is vintage and a thrift find at twenty dollars. I can still remember the thrill.

This little fall setting showcases the postage stamp quilt, above, on the reverse. Using both sides doubles the decorating possibilities!

A tiny vintage check cotton.

And a sweet yellow stripe incorporated to piece the fabric to make it wider.

I use my antique checked quilt in summer and at Christmas time. One of my finer selections. When you spent ten to twenty dollars on average you can justify a splurge!

I never forget how lucky I am to have this sample. It came from my husband's family. My sister in law choose this quilt, and then later gave it to me when she found she didn't really use it.

Oh, I'm happy to solve that kind of problem!

Fabulous stiching on the old cotton filled quilts!

Another antique quilt I purchased with the red checked one. I swallowed hard when I bought them together, but never looked back!

This lavender quilt is from the 20's or 30's and is shown on the reverse.

The random patchwork front is shown a little here in its pink and blue colorway, a theme I don't use that much.

A vintage basket pattern quilt in new condition.

Here is a machine quilted coverlet sewn on a printed cotton fabric with a quilt pattern. Less fragile than many vintage quilts, and still pretty. This gets frequent use in the nursery.

Your garden variety Tarjay or Wally World quilt can take tough use too. Red checks on the reverse. I wouldn't use an old quilt this way, but I've heard many weepy stories about what was done by hand-made quilts by unknowing daughters-in-law. Not guilty!

Another favorite. Vintage "drunkard's path" pattern. Solid pink on the reverse. Fifteen dollars. Who can explain why?

I do use quilts on beds too!

Modern, and hand quilted by Pine Cone Hill. The spring pattern utterly seduced me. The reverse is a frenchy russet and gold print. Yet to be featured.

And finally, this was a ten dollar rescue. Quite old and quite fragile, and can't be used in any practical way. I left it behind at first. It looked like it had lain around in a garage for fifty years. It partially fell apart in a good cleaning, but it was the only way I could keep it in the house! Isn't it wonderful for fall?

 Ready for a new week?
A new season?
Sure hope it's good!

Jacqueline

You must have a very large linen closet!

  12. Jacqueline, the vintage fairies must smile on you all the time! Such great finds! All so beautiful! That white one is stunning! And the sweet, tiny stitches that make those quilts so cuddly are just remarkable. Your scene with the quilt on the ground looks so inviting, yet, after finding two snakes in my yard recently, I won't be putting anything on the ground! We will keep our quilts on the table or the swing! Beautiful post!

  16. Your quilt collection is lovely. They would look great as sofa covers too. I use chenille blankets on my sofas. I quilt by hand and it is very relaxing and therapeutic.

  20. Beautiful quilts. You gave me a few ideas for displaying mine. My favorite of which is grandmother's flower garden. My grandmother pieced the top and my husband's grandmother quilted it. Thanks for sharing.

  21. Jacqueline, my dear. We are such kindred spirits. I adore your quilts collection. Like you, I have a hobby collecting little patchwork quilts (I adore hexagonal quilts & old vintage bright and cheerful colourful quilts which I casually drape over on my sofa and on the bed in each bedrooms) and crochet blankets. I have admiration for the local quiltmakers because of the amount of hard works and the endless hours that went into making one quilt - it's like weaving one dreams days and night. It's an art work in its own right! Furthermore, they are made to dispel the damp and cold of the British weather. Hope you are doing well and enjoying the beginning of the autumn.

  25. Jacqueline...What a wonderful quilt show this morning!!! Like you, I would not have been able to leave these quilts in the stores. Being a quiltmaker, I know how precious they are in the time spent making them, and the cost of fabric, etc, not to even mention the love poured into their making by the quiltmaker, for that's really what it takes to make a quilt...love and care. You have a treasure here! Thanks for the 'treat.' pat

  31. Hi Jacqueline: It really is getting to be quilt weather. But, as you say, quilts are lovely all year long. I have a red and white one that is in really good shape but, I think, is old. The red is so bright that it only works on the 4th of July. Is there a way that the red can be toned down a bit. I simply love the one that you use in your Christmas decorating. I think I'm asking the expert..Happy Monday..Judy

  32. What great quilts. I, too, love the postage stamp quilt. we have a smallish one that I keep hanging on the side of a daybed in our family room all year long. Just love the visual warmth of old quilts.

  33. Jacqueline,
I adore all of the quilts...mainly the vintage ones tuged at my heart! I, too, have a nice collection of vintage, hand stitched, heirloom quilts. Seems the more vintage I get, the more comfort they give. I found a few on a recent roadtrip...but couldn't justify the $85 price tags!!! Sadly, none of them followed me home!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  34. Hi Jacqueline! Not only are your quilts gorgeous but so is your staging and photography of them! They need to be in the pages of a magazine! I love the postage stamp one and all the table settings using the quilts! How pretty! I only have 2 vintage quilts that my grandma made years ago but I never get them out. I think you have inspired me to do so. Thankyou! Gina

  35. Oh, I can't choose a favorite. I love them all and I love the tablescapes that you've made. What talent! Everything is placed so perfectly.
I have slept under a quilt all of my life. I wish sometimes that I had put them up to save. Now that mama is gone, I hate that they are all frayed and worn. Still, nothing feels better than a soft, worn quilt on a cool, Autumn evening!
Love, love this post. A favorite for sure!

  37. What an amazing quilt collection you have--so many gorgeous ones to suit any decorating whim you might have that day! I love the many vignettes you created, but especially the blue and white one--I just love those colors together.

  38. I love each of these quilts, Jacqueline, and it's so intertesting to hear you tell of how you came to have them. (And the nifty prices!) I have only machine-made quilts in the house. A few Laura Ashley puffy ones (cabbage roses and pink/white stripes on the revers), a white puffy one with deep lace, and a more traditional 'flat' one similar to the floral mint green one you have. Wishing you a lovely week ahead.
