Casablanca Lilies For My Dining Room Table

I wanted to share my lilies before they took a turn for the worse. I like how long lasting mums and lilies are. I thought I would do something arty with them, but turns out a big bouquet in the center of the house was arty enough for the kind of week we've had.

Everything happens around this dining room table that my lilies stand on. I pay bills and craft here. I do blog shoots and tablescapes, and even feed an army sometimes. I'm always loading it up, and clearing it off.

Most of my dish collection is in this room, and I like being surrounded by favorite things as I go about my business. I cross this space a hundred times a day. For the moment (and for a while now), even though I have a room for the purpose, this functions as my office space.

I like the play of light in here at different times of the day. And I like having a nice big work surface. Even though this room is small, I keep the table almost fully extended all of the time. (There's even one more leaf I can add for a houseful of people.) It's easy to push a project to one side and still have a meal at the table.

I didn't completely intend to talk about my table in this post or I would have shown it to you. But maybe you can imagine it. It's not an antique. And I've owned it for the thirty five years of its life, and raised a family around it. It's a solid, dark oak, English style trestle table with fat turned legs. Its top was refinished once about fifteen years ago and is still in pristine shape.

It's been the de facto foundation of daily life for a lifetime. Nearly always under cover. My silent, almost unseen partner. But it's not so fashionable as it once was. On occasion I think of substituting something else. An antique farm table for instance. But here it still is. And even if I did replace it, I could never part with it now.

I never ever take it for granted. In fact, it gets a big bunch of lovely flowers sitting on top of it on a regular basis!

Oh the stories. . . .
Don't you wonder what your furniture might say if it had the chance?!

Well, I'm off to make more history.
 Hope your day is good!

  10. Yes, our table is the hub of our home also. We gather often just to visit or play games. Have to admit, hubby and I don't sit at it much to eat anymore. Usually fix a plate and head outdoors or watch the news. Your Lilies are beautiful and your table sound lovely.
    Hugs,
    Jann

  11. Hi J,
I love getting a look around your dining room, the sideboard, the dishes, yummy!! And the new sparkles of the chandy :-) I have an old waterfall dresser that was the first piece of furniture I bought when I got married, it was white, I stripped it and stained it dark, haha it goes with nothing else now, but it is an old friend, I know just what you mean :-) Ohhh Lilies, the smell, ahhhh!!
    Hugs,
    Bella

  15. Oh my gosh, those white lilies and chrysanthemums are heavenly. I loved hearing about your table and this room. The browns and whites are just so yummy. I love the incredible scent of the lilies, but chrysanthemums have the most wonderful musky spicy scent too, for some reason that scent really moves me...

  17. What a wonderful room, Jacqueline. I think the dining table along with the kitchen is the heart of the home. I've always done so much on mine that my now grown children thought it was normal to have the sewing machine as a fourth person at the table.

    Hugs,
    Laura

  20. What beautiful lilies, Jacqueline, and such a loving retelling of your table's history, function and place in your home. I love thinking about the life stories my belongings have witnessed, although I have so many hand-me-downs and "found" pieces that their histories are unknown to me. But I like imagining who might have owned them and what they've seen. I agree that a dining room table is the best possible surface for crafts, office, writing. When I redid my office upstairs I purposely chose an old dining room table that had been in storage as my "desk". Wishing you a happy day!

  23. Dear Jacqueline, I'm glad I am not the only one always clearing and loading my "dining" table. I have spent the day clearing it so I can have a brunch this weekend. I believe I remember your table--with different chairs back then. What a treasure and what memories!!
    Love, Kay
