American Vintage~A Summer Montage

So many conversations in a vintage shop start with "My grandmother had one of those." And of all seasons, summer seems to evoke the most memories of the past. For me, vintage linens in particular make up the fabric of the season. From cozy colorful quilts, to cheery printed tablecloths, to soft and worn striped kitchen towels, each seems to carry in its very fiber the essence of the family farm, an old lake house, or the slap of the kitchen screen door. So I've gathered up some of my favorite images to share in a montage of a vintage summer.

Give me a lazy hot weekend afternoon and I'm transported to another time filled with juicy memories of watermelon and lemonade. To this day I prefer a charred hot dog to one cooked to perfection.

The buzzing of bees. Flies humming. A trickle of water from a stream or a hose. The crack of a croquet mallet hitting a wooden ball. It's time to gather up the vintage threads of summer. . . .

My thing happens to be textiles. What triggers the ideal summer for you? I'd love to hear. I know so many of you still have rain and cold, but we've had the most blissful June weather we could ever hope for. And it's brought a flood of happy memories back for me. Our busy travel and visiting hasn't quite started yet, so there's been time just to BE. What a gift! I hope you get a bit of that time too. Thanks so much for stopping by to say hello!

Wow...Jacqueline, such awesome images. Many happy summer after supper times were spent playing croquet and then hide and seek after dark. This post is so timely, as right now (in between looking at blogs) I am sewing a red and white cushion that looks so much like the red and white vintage towels you are showing us. We have had absolutely perfect June weather too and I have loved every minute of it! xo

Red is my favorite color and so those linens really appealed to me. Summer makes me think of the beach and music and fun.

Delighted to have enjoyed your vintage summer, Jacqueline! I love the colors red and white for sunny days...and you are totally right- summer is a season for childhood memories, collecting fireflies in a jar, stargazing in a night summer sky ...oh ...
Enjoy!

Jacqueline,
Lovely vintage red linens!!! The quilts get to me everytime. Hot afternoons on the Prairie spent under the shade of a great oak tree with a cool breeze blowing. We had NO air conditioning! Kids today would surely melt!!! Ha! The tablecloths with the cherries bring wonderful memories of my beloved Mother ~in ~law! Thanks for this "Ode to Summer" post, dear friend!
Fondly,
Pat

me to do over a whole room in red

This post is bringing me back to my kitchen growing up! My Mom loved to have pops of red year round but more so in the summer. In my home I whiten things even more for summer and at my campground I embrace red, white and blue. Thanks for such a beautiful post!

What a lovely post Jacqualine...

What would have been even better if this great-grandmother could have spent the afternoon enjoying the summer weather and sipping our tea.

Appreciated all the red in the post.

Joyfully,

Oh my goodness, you really captured it... all you left out was the scent of honeysuckle... homemade peach ice cream, or peach cobbler... lightening bugs, and fans running all the time, i'm old enough to remember no air conditioning, and a big ole attic fan turned on at bedtime sucking in the summer scented night air...

You just cannot do summer any better than red and white. Do you think that is because I'm Canadian??!! Maybe! Beautiful post, Jacqueline!

Your vignettes remind me of summers when I was growing up. You have a wonderful collection of vintage linens. Love the red and white tea towels.
Summers always make me think of catching lightening bugs when I was little. I still love seeing them.
Have a great Summer,

These are such lovely and evocative images, Jacqueline. Those vintage linens, trays and glassware remind me so much of my childhood. To me, summer means big jars of sun tea.. adirondack chairs with large striped pillows.. old canvas market umbrellas casting a shadow over the book I'm reading.. verandah rockers and wicker chairs with overstuffed white cushions trimmed with lace.. the sound of birds at the feeder or birdbath.. the buzz of cicadas in the trees overhead on a hot day.. and of course the chiming tune of Ice Cream truck! I hope you enjoy these last weeks of Summer, Jacqueline!
