Weekend For Grownups~A Book, Recipe, Movie, & A Few Garden Shots

We had our big family weekend last week. This long weekend is for relaxation and a real stay-cation, starting out with a trip to the home center where I found this New Cottage Style book on the shelf. I've been getting a few fun ideas, and that little getaway feeling in snatches of perusal between light chores. No big chores this weekend please!

Lots of sunshine even if it's a little too breezy for my taste. We're in the high 80's.

Here's a few sample pages.

This rustic room made me long for a vacation beach house somewhere. I love all the open storage and rough walls. And look to the left by the door. The switch plate is totally exposed! Almost like my own little home sweet home! haha!

Love the tile floor. Beautiful, and such easy maintenance.

There are no architectural pieces like this for miles and miles and miles and miles around here. Not at all New Mexico style, but how wonderful!

We tried out a new recipe from Ina Garten's book yesterday with great success!

It's time for lighter summer fare, and this salad was utterly simple and delicious. You might want to try it.

We also took in a movie during the week that was perfectly delightful. But I had to caution my young friends that the movie is for MATURE AUDIENCES. All the actors are in their seventies.

If you would like to read a NY Times article about it you will find it HERE. I loved it and will be seeing it again and again. Sweet, humourous, and with wonderful depth, about world travelers of  a certain age from all walks of life who meet at an unexpected turn in their respective journeys. Maybe you still have time left to find it this weekend!

The secret garden gate has been in full costume for a couple of weeks now and already has a few secrets tucked inside, as I found when I was snapping a few shots.

This patient mother was already banished from our other patio recently. Even wasps have to find a place to live. But she picks all the best ones!

I hope you're having a fine time this weekend whether you're at home or away!
So nice that you stopped by!

Jacqueline

  1. I'm going to try to find a copy of the Cottage Style book and I've never bought a cookbook by the Barefoot Contessa but I think I need that one. I've seen the trailer for that movie and now I want to see it too. Thank you for sharing all of these.

  6. Jacqueline,
I could eat salad (or hot soup) any timeof the year. This salad looks YuMmY! Yourgarden is lovely!!! "Mr. Ed" and I spent the evening on the deck...after the temperatures cooled off a bit. It was divine!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat
P.S. Those roses were my Grandmother's favorite. She had two bushes that flanked her front porch. Thank you for this gentle reminder!

  7. The book and recipe look wonderful...it's the movie that I want to see. I love Dame Judi Dentch and all her movies and BBC shows.

I love your secret door and all of your ivy, my home is covered with it, too. Amazing what it hides!

  8. I was looking at that very book in the car today and pointed out the light switch to my husband. Too funny! I bought the book a few weeks ago and just now had a chance to really look at it. Great book! Your garden gate looks magical, but I'm not a lover of wasps. They keep making their home underneath some roof shingles near our back door. I wish they'd move to somebody else's yard. :@

  11. This sounds a lovely way to spend a weekend - the film is one that I want to see, everyone who has seen it seems to have enjoyed it. I love the secret garden gate though it would be better without the wasp perhaps:)

  13. Jacqueline,
I just had that cottage style decorating book in my hands yesterday at a home center and I thought it was the best cottage style book I had seen in a long time. It looked exactly like all of our blogs! Finally the publishers have figured out what people want by looking at their blogs!

  15. Jacqueline, your wonderful photograph of that salad made me so hungry! I'll have to try that recipe. Also want to buy the cottage book!! I did go see the movie with my oldest daughter and really enjoyed it. Made me wonder about my future. The closer I get, the younger the 70's are!! Love all your beautiful photos! Just fabulous!

  16. It sounds like you had a lovely weekend, Jacqueline! I've been hoping to see that film and am glad to hear you enjoyed it. Your ivy-draped gate reminds me of the Scarlet Runner Beans I grow each year -- they fully engulf the teepee trellis I make for them! I call them "Cousin It"!
