Letting Go Of May

Our roses have rewarded us well this year after what I have to say has been minimal attention. It's just a shame that they won't continue to bloom in such profusion for long. All of the first blooms have been deadheaded. Something we have never consistently done. We will feed them again (another first), and see what is to come.

Summer has crept up on us. After what seemed like an eternal wait for spring, it appears that she's passing us by. I have found that the enjoyment of spring can last much longer when you read blogs because it arrives so late for some of you in the north. The spring flowering has just continued to unfold online. I think for pretty much all of you now it's full bloom. So here is a little celebration to make the seasonal transition!

The holiday weekend here will be a good time for us to say goodbye to the early sweetness, and greet the coming season with open arms. I'm looking forward to a summer full of understated adventure. Not quite with the abandon of  youngsters breaking free from schedules and classrooms. But with the pure sense of possibility that hot weather always brings. . . .

Rose strewn china and linen helps extend the blooming season!

We had these roses in pots on the patio for a couple of seasons. Now that they have been planted in the garden they are really taking off!

I hope your last week of May is full of sweetness!

Jacqueline

  1. So so beautiful!! Wish I could "beam myself over" and enjoy some of your heat. My Miss Kim lilacs finally bloomed in great abundance, only to be beaten to death by days of rain. Poor things. And our high today was 56! So again and again, thanks for the beautiful, uplifting blog to keep me near sane!! Love, Kay

  2. I, too, have enjoyed your early blooms. Other than the flowering trees, we really don't have much blooming right now up north. But with many days of rain, everything is lush and green. Your roses are lovely and so are your vintage teacups.

  3. I deadhead my flowers until my head feels dead. I am rewarded as you are. The roses are beautiful. I do not fertilize much if ever. It is very hot here and I have been watering up a storm. Have a terrific weekend.

And I AM IN LOVE with those clear glass plates. Oh my, I'd love to get my hands on those!!

May is kinda going out "like a lion" here. Rained all week, and only in the high 40's.
Oh my, Alberta can be miserable sometimes.
Have a great Memorial Weekend. I was in Utah last year at this time, and it was wonderful to enjoy the warmer temps. and go visit my sons gravesite.
I will miss that this year.

  27. There's nothing like roses to say 'summer is here'. The photo of the very pale one near the top is absolutely stunning, what a beautiful bloom.

  28. Dear Jacqueline, Your "rosey" table is just so pretty. And you certainly did have so many beautiful roses in bloom in May! Here in New England the last of the roses have finally gone by. The red rambler bloomed throughout June, and the little Cape Cod rose bush bloomed right through July! You're right that it's nice to hang on to the seasons a bit longer (or experience them sooner!) by reading blogs from other climates. I hope you've had a beautiful summer.
