A Few Irish Things

Like most everyone else I'm thinking of things Irish this week. In Ireland we learned that St. Patrick's Day is celebrated differently than in America. Correct me if I'm wrong!

I like to get out and hear a bit of Irish music and sip a Harp or Guinness for fun, but these days that is VERY optional. But I do like to remember my Irish roots, and for me that is more about literature and Irish lace.

My mother was a Kelley, and I heard my uncle call her that most of my life. Never by her first name. The other side of the equation is that Mr. Cottage and I met at the university the semester we both took a class on James Joyce, the reknown Irish writer. The Dubliners brought us together.

So Happy St. Patrick's Day people! I've gathered up a few of my favorite Irish things to share, starting with this linen cloth with shamrocks embroidered on it.

It seems a good time to gather up a few vintage Irish linen damask napkins, still in mint condition.

Nothing like that soft linen sheen!

Just beautiful when the light catches the pattern.

A wee bit of handmade Irish Lace.

Finally a lovely piece of all white Belleek porcelain. Its mark in the traditional green.

I hope you're having as much fun finding your Irish this week!

  19. My grandfather six or seven generations back came from Ireland in the 1700s. My Irish roots are pretty faint by now, but the Irish make everyone feel at home when you visit Ireland. And I always cook a corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day.

    Your things are lovely!

  20. this is most lovely. I love that topper with the beautiful hand appliqued stitched edges on the shamrocks. Goodness. And the silver with the almost celtic knot and the lovely motif is certainly my favorite piece. Beautiful composition. Nice to know how you and Mr. Cottage met.

  21. Such a beautiful arrangement of lovely things, Jacqueline! The lace color is so pretty, and I can almost feel the soft sheen of that damask. My Irish grandmother used to brew tea for me as a child that she'd say was "strong enough to trot a mouse across the top".

  36. LOVED!! The shamrock linene. so pretty.
I have no Irish anything in my heritage.
Some Scottish however (on my dad's side)....aren't they rivals??

I enjoy the Green Beer, but that is the extent of it for me. When I was working as a Judges' clerk in Utah before moving here...On St. Patrick's day I always wore a badge that said "Kiss me, I'm Canadian"
