Simple Vintage

Like many of you, my vintage inspiration comes from my favorite decorating books. There are the volumes you choose for entertainment. Others, for pure fantasy (like you could ever have anything even CLOSE to what you're seeing on the page). And then there are the books that inspire you to creativity and action. Josephine Ryan's book, Essentially French, and Simple Home, by Mark and Sally Bailey, are among those in the latter category for me.

I would never choose only ONE style. But I find that my tastes constantly evolve, and so do my collections.  For the time being, what I want to look at needs to be beautiful, and simpler. Like a blank canvas, I need to create what I want to see TODAY in the empty space.

A few months ago I took down my upper kitchen cabinets and have been thrilled with the result ever since. There will never be enough space in my kitchen, but I have resisted putting up anything to obscure the liberated wall space that just lets me BE in my designated cooking area.

I want as much vintage in the kitchen as is useful and practical because of its beauty and inherent value. I haven't simplified near enough yet. But with each passing day of effort my satisfaction, comfort, and enjoyment grows and grows. To see more of the original process, and my solution to storing what was in my cabinets see my earlier post here.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Ciao! for now!

  1. Your kitchen looks great without any upper cabinets... very European... love it! I love your collection of dishes on the counter, too. The brown and white dishes look beautiful with the simpler all white ironstone dishes. I just did a post sort of about decorating simply, too. I just prefer that style of decorating the most.
    Have a good night,

  4. I soooo want to remove my upper cabs, but as we don't plan to stay in this home forever, I need to keep them as is.

  13. It looks great, but whatever did you do with all your stuff? I never have enough storage, and as much as I would like to set my kitchen on fire and start over, I would have no where to put my huge collection of dishes! The cookware already lives in the pantry -- so that's not an option, either. Please show us how you solved it.

  15. Absolutely LUV any kitchen w/out upper cabinets! Especially if you have a small kitchen, the extra "vision" space just opens up the area and lets light bounce all around. What is your little cabinet skirt made of and how did you mount it there? I think that's just adorable and would love to do that beneath my sink. Happy MM to you!

  16. Dear Laurie @ Heaven's Walk: The curtain is an antique homespun linen towel folded exactly in half over a spring rod and pinned on at the corners to stay in place. I have a few mates to this one to change out when it needs washing.
